The number of enquiries received by the Record during 1979 has<br />

exceeded all previous annual totals. 700 visitors have used the Record<br />

in the Field Section, an increase of 100 over the previous year, while<br />

the number of queries answered by post and telephone rose sharply to<br />

nearly 1500.<br />

PLANNING ASPECTS'<br />

.The Field Section haa continued to.providea variety, of services, to<br />

the County. and District Planning authorities in collaboration'with the<br />

Ox<strong>for</strong>dshire-Archaeological Unit. In addition to the:routine.scanning<br />

of weekly. schedules of planning applications and comments on mineral<br />

applications and road study corridors-, ,the Museum has contributed to<br />

Local Plans <strong>for</strong> Abingdon, Banbury,,Cassington/Yarnton,'Eynaham, Faringdon,<br />

Lewknor, Thame,.Walling<strong>for</strong>d and*Witney,.and has'alao.prOvided adviceon<br />

proposed'Unservation Areas, at.Balscott, Bensom.and Bletchingdon-and<br />

has commented on .proposed extensions to existing COnservation.Areas. at,.<br />

Eynsham, Henley-On-Thames, Thame and Witney.<br />

The Field Section provided proof.of evidence.at the' Public Enquiry<br />

concerning prOposed housing developMent.inyolving..the demOlitiono-of a<br />

listed wall at the Tchure,Deddington.' The Secretary-of State decided<br />

to oppose the demolition:.'The section was alao represented at the Public'<br />

Enquiry into the proposed housing development north of the scheduled ancient<br />

monument' Of Deddington Castle. Again.the Secretary of-State refused<br />

permission. Thia is:significant because clearly the-Department of the<br />

Environment regard 'the' setting of an .ancient monument as of.importance..<br />

CROP MARKS<br />

In addition to the crop-mark sites identified by Richard Hingley -<br />

during his systematic scanning of the 1961 and 1969 air photographs,<br />

noted above, several new sites have also come to.light accidentally<br />

during the use of the photographs <strong>for</strong> other purposes during the course<br />

of the Museum's own work. These include the following:-<br />

CHADLINGTON'f(PRN's 12, 205-6) (SP/320243, 317237): Two complexes of<br />

irregular and sub-rectangular enclosures and a sinuous pair<br />

of parallel ditches nearLowland Barn.<br />

CHILSON-:(PRN.12,410)'(SP/300205): Roughly.rectengular encloaure with<br />

internal pits'w. of Pudlicote.Lane.<br />

BAILEY (PRN'a 10,51374) (SP/37111428, 37081426):<br />

NE of Shakenoak Farm.<br />
