CSU POLICY ON ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND SMOKING<br />

ALCOHOL<br />

Maryland <strong>State</strong> Law is enforced in all facilities and on the campus. Alcohol may not be possessed or<br />

consumed by anyone. No alcohol is allowed. This is a dry (non-alcohol) campus.<br />

DRUGS<br />

The use, cultivation, manufacture, sale, distribution, and/or possession of drugs or controlled substances<br />

in violation of Federal, <strong>State</strong>, or Local law are prohibited by the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

SMOKING<br />

<strong>Coppin</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not permitted in any facility. <strong>Student</strong>s,<br />

employees, and visitors are prohibited from smoking tobacco, chewing smokeless tobacco, or using snuff,<br />

in any existing building.<br />

CSU POLICY ON DESTRUCTIVE STUDENT GROUPS<br />

<strong>Coppin</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> encourages the formation and continued existence student organizations and<br />

clubs, which provide students with the opportunity to participate in their educational experience beyond<br />

the classroom. In making this opportunity available to the student population, <strong>Coppin</strong> has the obligation<br />

to ensure the fundamental rights of individual members of the groups. Accordingly, <strong>Coppin</strong> prohibits<br />

individuals or the groups collectively from engaging in verbal or physical abuse, threats, intimidation,<br />

harassment, coercion and/or other conduct which threatens or endangers the mental or physical health or<br />

safety of any person, or which destroys public or private property, for the purpose of recruitment,<br />

initiations, decision into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or<br />

organization, including but not limited to acts of hazing which are prohibited by law.<br />

Violations of the policy will result in withdrawal of the organization’s charter and/or institutional<br />

recognition for un-chartered groups and will subject individuals who engage in prohibited behaviors to<br />

the disciplinary procedures set forth in the <strong>Student</strong> Code of Conduct.<br />

DEFINITION OF DESTRUCTIVE GROUPS<br />

A destructive group (cult-like) is a group with a hidden agenda of power which is achieved by deceptive<br />

recruitment and control over the minds and lives of its members.<br />

CHARACTERISTICS OF DESTRUCTIVE GROUPS<br />

As a general rule, be aware that every destructive group can be defined as a group having all of the<br />

following five (5) characteristics:<br />

1. It believes’ the end justifies the means’ in order to solicit funds and recruit people and therefore<br />

uses deception, manipulation, and high pressure tactics when recruiting.<br />

2. It creates a comprehensive environment and lifestyle that occupy the entire person’s attention,<br />

monitors activities such as eating and sleeping, and defines all activities by absolute principles.<br />

3. It forms an elitist totalitarian society and promotes an “us vs. them” mentality.<br />
