Three<br />
The <strong>Writing</strong> Process<br />
In short, the writing process comprises the mechanics<br />
by which writers create publishable products. It is the<br />
method all writers use to generate ideas, choose and<br />
organize these ideas, write and revise their pieces, and<br />
format them for publication. In terms of instruction, it<br />
represents a holistic approach, encouraging creation of<br />
an entire product, rather than working on pieces of this<br />
process and only infrequently putting it all together (a<br />
procedure all too frequently seen in textbooks). <strong>Writing</strong><br />
process instruction is just that—process oriented—and<br />
encourages young writers to discover for themselves the<br />
mechanics of composition. And while still infrequent<br />
in textbooks, Dyson and Freedman (1990) point out<br />
that over the past two decades, there has been a significant<br />
shift from a focus only on the products of writing<br />
to studying the processes associated with how writers<br />
write.<br />
If you format your class as a writing workshop, the writing<br />
process will be indispensable, as it will be how students<br />
engage themselves for the majority of their time.<br />
