Assessment and the Traits of Good Writing
With this formula, you first create a percentage out of
your seven-trait assessment score and weigh it out of
50 points. You then pad the score with an additional 45
points. This method also works well when choosing not
to assess all seven traits. The formula generates the following
scores from trait-based assessment. As you can
see, these scores convert directly to the standard percentages
for grades A to F.

Advantages
A. Creates a median of C.
B. Works well for assignments without supporting materials
in the form of assignment packets.
Disadvantages
With 5/5 = 95% (as shown in the table above), a perfect
score still misses five points. If you like, you can create a
criteria through which students can earn these extra five
points, such as Author’s Chair performance or an extracredit
activity sheet.
