Assessment and the Traits of Good Writing

the assignment solely on conventions. If you
decide to collect assignments after the drafting
stage, students haven’t yet edited their work and
you could choose to exclude conventions from
the seven-trait assessment. Consider which traits
are applicable to each assignment and assess
accordingly.
• Use the traits to comment on student writing
rather than taking the time to write lengthy
descriptive comments on each paper.
• Target only certain students for more in-depth
assessment. Some students may need more
direction than others.
• Choose one (or perhaps two) traits to assess while
students read their work aloud during Author’s
Chair. Without looking at the published copy,
you will still be able to assign an accurate score
to Ideas, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency and,
potentially, Voice and Organization.
• Instruct students to give oral feedback using the
language of the traits. While not necessarily a
thorough assessment, conferencing in peer groups
and during the revision process allows significant
feedback without an unnecessary draw on your
time.
