4.3 Pedestrian / Bicycle<br />

Pathways<br />

Well-designed circulation for pedestrians and bicyclists is<br />

essential for the smooth and safe operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ARTIC</strong><br />

<strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong>. Circulation should be clearly defined,<br />

safe and comfortable for the users. The following guidelines<br />

should be considered for the Pedestrian Promenade and<br />

other pedestrian/bicycle pathways on the site:<br />

Provide convenient and safe pedestrian and bicycle<br />

connections that lead directly to the <strong>ARTIC</strong> Transit Center<br />

entries/exits and other land uses.<br />

Maximize grade-separated pedestrian connections.<br />

Where grade separation is necessary, the pedestrian<br />

connection should be continuous and integrated.<br />

Provide adequate sight distance , adequate widths and<br />

continuous visibility along pedestrian and bicycle routes.<br />

Avoid hidden or recessed areas that could be used for<br />

hiding.<br />

Provide directional and information signage elements<br />

along pedestrian and bicycle routes to direct users<br />

toward the transit station.<br />

Adequately illuminate all pedestrian and bicycle routes<br />

to ensure safety.<br />

Provide periodic shelter elements along pedestrian<br />

routes, such as building projections, awnings and shade<br />

trees.<br />

Provide enhanced paving and permanent seating and<br />

along pedestrian routes.<br />

Activate the street by providing ground-floor uses that<br />

are appealing to pedestrians, such as retail shops and<br />

restaurants.<br />

Provide convenient and attractive bicycle parking areas<br />

that are close to building entrances, protected from the<br />

weather and do not conflict with pedestrian traffic.<br />

4.4 Signage / Wayfinding<br />

Implementation <strong>of</strong> a cohesive, project-wide signage and<br />

wayfinding program that creates a sense <strong>of</strong> place, identity<br />

and orientation for the <strong>ARTIC</strong> <strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong> is critical.<br />

A coordinated signage and wayfinding program shall be<br />

required for the entire <strong>ARTIC</strong> <strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong>. The<br />

signage program should include, but is not limited to, the<br />

following components:<br />

Identity Signs: Identity elements that welcome visitors to<br />

the <strong>ARTIC</strong> <strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong>, and identify the locations<br />

and services <strong>of</strong> uses within the development. Identity<br />

signs should be clearly visible and reflect the branding<br />

image <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ARTIC</strong> <strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong>. Identity signs<br />

could include project monument signs, building identity,<br />

tenant and parking identity signs.<br />

Directional Signs: A comprehensive wayfinding system<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> pedestrian and vehicular signs that quickly<br />

and efficiently direct people to destinations within the<br />

<strong>ARTIC</strong> <strong>Mixed</strong>-<strong>Use</strong> <strong>District</strong>. Directional signs should be<br />

clear, legible and consistent in size, shape and design.<br />

Parking directional signs should be Light Emitting<br />

Diodes (LED) changeable message signs to enable<br />

smart parking operations. Also, these directional signs<br />

should incorporate reflective vinyl copy for nighttime<br />

illumination.<br />

Information Signs: Signs that provide detailed<br />

information about the specific environment/uses within<br />
