CHAPTER 7 RESOURCE MANAGEMENTSummaryOne of the biggest challenges for DBAs is effectively managing system resources to meet businessobjectives. Over the years <strong>Oracle</strong> has developed a rich set of features that make resource management areality. Unfortunately, these features are rarely implemented due to their complexity. But make nomistake, as servers become more powerful and efficient, database consolidation is going to becomeincreasingly common. This is especially true of the <strong>Exadata</strong> platform. Understanding how to leveragedatabase and I/O resource management is going to become an increasingly important tool for ensuringthat your databases meet the demands of your business. The best advice we can offer is to keep thingssimple. Attempting to make use of every bell and whistle in <strong>Oracle</strong> Resource Manager can lead toconfusion and undesirable results. If you do not have a specific need for multi-level resource plans, thenstick to the single-level approach; they are easy to implement and measure, and they work great in mostsituations. Category plans are another rarely needed feature. A majority of the situations you will facecan be resolved by implementing a simple, single-level Interdatabase Resource Plan. So again, startsmall, keep it simple, and add features as you need them.235
