Our foray into the Exadata space began over a year agowith an Exadata V2 Quarter Rack configuration. A couple of months ago we upgraded our system to ahalf rack. Of course, the V2s are no longer in production, so our upgrade came in the form of two X2-2database servers, and four storage cells. The configuration options we considered were as follows:• Configure the new X2 equipment as a separate RAC cluster and storage grid, creating two somewhat asymmetric quarter rack configurations within the sameExadata enclosure. Oracle refers to this as a “split rack” configuration.• Add the new X2 equipment to our existing quarter rack cluster; effectivelyupgrading it to a half rack.Creating a New RAC ClusterThe DBM Configurator doesn’t directly support upgrading a system in this manner, but with a fewadjustments it can be used to generate all the files OneCommand needs to perform the installation.Once the parameter and deployment files are uploaded to Exadata, you should have no problemrunning through all of the configuration steps without impacting your existing cluster. One coworkeractually used this process to create a separate Exadata configuration on the new equipment whileleaving the existing system untouched. For the most part, you simply fill in the DBM Configurator spreadsheet as if you are creating atypical quarter rack configuration. The tricky part is making sure the sequentially assigned network IPaddresses don’t conflict with your current system. There are a few items you will need to consider whenusing the DBM Configurator for this type of Exadata upgrade:Name Prefixes:– It is not required, but you may want to set your DatabaseMachine Name, Database Server Base Name, and Storage Servers Base Namesvalues to match your existing Exadata configuration. That way, if you ever268
