The University of Texas at San AntonioDepartment of AccountingMission StatementSpring 2007The mission of the Department of Accounting is to advance accounting knowledge andpractice through excellence in accounting education, high-impact research, and relevantcontinuing education and professional outreach activities that serve the constituents ofthe department in the state, nation and globally.The educational mission of the Department of Accounting is to prepare students forprofessional careers in industry, public accounting, and other organizations. Anundergraduate accounting education emphasizing technological, cognitive, andcommunication skills provides the basic foundation for graduate study or a professionalcareer in industry/government. The Master of Accountancy augments anundergraduate degree through in-depth study in financial accounting, taxation, auditingand managerial accounting. The PhD program develops students’ research and teachingskills essential to success in an academic career. Each program is continually evaluatedto ensure current relevance in today’s dynamic business environment. Alumni,employers, and interested others provide direction and input in the curriculumevaluation process.The research mission of the Department of Accounting is to create accountingknowledge that is relevant to theory, practice, and education, and to disseminate thisresearch to the broadest possible audience through publication in high-quality researchjournals. Research published in applied and specialized research journals and highqualitypractitioner journals also contribute to the department’s mission to createaccounting knowledge.Service to local, state, national and international constituents is an integral role for theDepartment of Accounting. The service mission of the Department of Accountingsupports the educational needs of alumni, employers, and other constituents withactivities that promote professional growth and development and through participationin community and professional activities.Addressing the issue of Assurance of Learning (AOL) goals, the Department of Accountingprogram has matured considerably since the previous visit. The Department of Accounting participatesin the AOL program of the College of Business which, in turn, is a component of the AOL program of theuniversity. Since that time, the AOL program has been standardized across the university. This wasdone to meet the requirements of AOL for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)reaccreditation, an effort that was completed in 2010.7
The AOL program of the department is continuously reviewed and updated. Assessments arecompleted every semester for each program and reviewed by the college’s Director of Assessment. Thelearning goals and how those are assessed are constantly being reviewed by the faculty. Thesecommittees enhance the quality of the master’s and doctoral learning goals and assessment tools ineach assessment period. During 2010, all learning goals for every program in the university werereviewed by AOL directors from different colleges and further strengthened. The Master’s and DoctoralProgram Committees review the AOL reports for each period.8
