What opportunities exist for enhancing the applicant's degree offerings?The Department of Accounting is actively exploring the conversion of our existing early graduateadmissions program into a lock-step, cohort based 150-hour program more in line with the other 150-hour integrated undergraduate/master’s programs offered at the flagship universities in the state. Thiswill enhance the competitiveness of our 150-hour program and will allow the students in that programto have more opportunities with the large public accounting firms who increasingly favor graduatesfrom those programs.In recent years the university and the Department of Information Technology have developed astrong focus on information security. The Department of Accounting is currently in discussion with thecollege’s Information Technology Department to develop a joint master’s program in accounting andinformation security. Progress Update on Concerns from Previous Review: Provide an update on progress inaddressing “Concerns that must be addressed prior to or at the time of the next maintenancereview” as stated in the last AACSB accreditation review official correspondence:The Peer Review Team (PRT) visited the Department of Accounting in February 2007. The teamrecommended reaccreditation that was subsequently granted. At that time there were two items whichwere designated as “Concerns that must be addressed.” These were:1. The department’s strategic plan and mission statement are limited in scope andsomewhat dated. The department should complete a more comprehensivestrategic plan that includes a revision of its mission statement. Specifically, therevised plan and mission statement should address the department’s doctoralprogram and the department’s strengthened research emphasis.2. Some of the department’s learning goals for the master’s and doctoral program arenot measurable and some do not satisfy the definition of a learning goal. Thefaculty should restructure the goals to assure that they have carefully definedmeasures for success and a formalized process for closing the loop.At the time of the last review the department was engaged in a strategic planningprocess that included reviewing and updating the Department of Accounting Mission Statement.However, that committee had not completed its work by the time of the PRT visit. As noted bythe PRT, the department needed to bring the mission statement in line with the greateraspirations of the university and college. In particular the revised mission statement needed toreflect the fact that the department had begun to support a PhD program.Responding to the PRT’s report, a faculty committee proposed and the faculty adoptedthe following completely revised mission statement in the late Spring of 2007. This revisedmission statement, given below, was submitted to and approved by the AACSB AccountingAccreditation Committee in the Fall of 2007. This is the mission statement that we have in placetoday. The mission statement guides the actions of the department and serves as a tool forstrategic planning, program evaluation and curriculum development.As recommended by the PRT in its last visit, the current strategic mission includes boththe doctoral program and the increased emphasis on research that was present, but notacknowledged, in the prior mission statement. This mission statement also reflects a muchbroader commitment on the part of the department to an expanded world view. This expandedview moves away from the regional focus of the prior mission statement and recognizes thenational and global focus that both the college and university have adopted.An additional issue raised by the PRT was the strategic planning process. At the time of thePRT’s visit, the department had begun but not completed a formal strategic planning process. Thatstrategic plan was completed in the Fall of 2007, after the untimely death of the committee chair, Dr.Russell Briner. A copy is included in the Appendix to this document. The Department of Accountingstrategic planning process follows both the university and College of Business strategic planning efforts.The department has completed the 2011-2016 Strategic Plan. Both the 2007-2011 and 2011-2016strategic plans are included in the Appendix.6
