Department of AccountingStrategic Planning Process2007-2012Members of the Department of Accounting faculty participate in all of the College of Businessstrategic planning sessions. However, as a separately accredited unit under the AACSB rulesthe Department also has to have its own strategic planning exercise.Consequently, the Department of Accounting began a more formal procedure for strategicplanning with a Strategic Retreat on October 28, 2006. This retreat was attended by all facultyand staff members in the Department of Accounting. The faculty was lead through a SWOTexercise by Dr. Russell Briner, and a number of strategic directions were identified. The processwas continuing when the AACSB Team conducted its review. In the AACSB review datedFebruary 2007 the Department was criticized for its lack of adequate strategic planning:―Strategic Planning. It is often helpful to have someone outside of the unit involved in thestrategic planning process. The Department has begun the planning process, but progress hasbeen slow. The Review Team suggests that the Department use the College of BusinessCenter for Professional Excellence to assist them in this effort. “Dr. Briner continued to work on the strategic planning process, involving the then in placeAdvisory Committee composed of the following individuals:Mr. Anthony Berrett, KPMG, LLPMr. Steward Goodson, Ernst and YoungMs. Nancy Ozuna, The Hanke GroupMr. Dayton Schrader, The Schrader GroupMr. Dan Slattery, Dan Slattery and Associates, CPAs.In addition the opinions of other members of the community were selected, however, not on asystematic basis. Most unfortunately, Dr. Briner passed away in August 2007 before the finaldraft of the strategic plan for the Department of Accounting was completed.Using the information collected by Dr. Briner as well as other sources, this document wascompleted by Dr. James Groff with the assistances of Dr. Marshall Pitman and various membersof the Department of Accounting Executive Committee. It reflects the best effort of theDepartment of Accounting faculty to prepare a strategic planning document under the difficultcircumstances brought about by Dr. Russell Briner’s untimely passing.
