The crack, which runs diagonally upwards from rightto left, is entered by an awkward movement after climbing5 feet up the right-h<strong>and</strong> wall <strong>of</strong> the corner. Strenuous.Good holds are reached after 15 feet.LOWER HOWE CRAGSPOSTCRIPT 170 feet. Very difficult. First ascent 14thMarch, 1956. G.W.M., D. Heald, R. Bosomworth. Startsat the finish <strong>of</strong> Sunshine Arete at a large grass shelf.(1) 70 feet. Up a right-angled scoop for 20 feet. H<strong>and</strong> traverseright beneath a huge overhang to a good pull up in thecorner. Climb the crack <strong>and</strong> continue over gendarmes to alarge belay.(2) 30 feet. Moderate rocks to the summit <strong>of</strong> the pinnacle.Descend the slab to the pinnacle gap.(3) 45 feet. Up a steep crack <strong>and</strong> traverse left to the foot <strong>of</strong> acracked wall. Straight up this.(4) 25 feet. Easy but pleasant rock leads to scrambling to summit<strong>of</strong> crag.RED DELL BUTTRESSThis crag lies behind the Coppermines Youth Hostel on the spurto the right <strong>of</strong> the outlet <strong>of</strong> Levers Water; near small aqueducts.DIAGONAL 160 feet. Difficult. First ascent 16th March,1956. G.W.M., D. C. Villani, E. Wood. Startson the side <strong>of</strong> the crag away from the Youth Hostel at thefoot <strong>of</strong> a long diagonal chimney splitting a large steep wall.(1) 25 feet. Up to a sentry-box <strong>and</strong> flake belay.(2) 100 feet. Climb chimney on its lower edge to fissure at top.(3) 35 feet. Straight up a pleasant slab to the top <strong>of</strong> the crag.HEATHER CHIMNEY 130 feet. Difficult. First ascent 16th March,1956. G.W.M., D. C. Villani, E. Wood. Starts at the foot<strong>of</strong> the obvious ridge on the side farthest away from theYouth Hostel.(1) 30 feet. Up the ridge to a broad ledge.(2) 100 feet. Into the chimney on the ordinary (well marked)route for a few feet. Then climb the crack widening to achimney.(3) Finish up the easy slab to the left <strong>of</strong> the last pitch <strong>of</strong> Diagonal.RAVEN CRAG, YEWDALEThe crag is seen on the right <strong>of</strong> Tilberthwaite Valley looking fromYewdale Farm.COBRA 150 feet. Very severe. First ascent August,1959. R. C. Cain, M. Tweed, P. Shotton,E. Tweed. Starts at a small cairn about 25 feetdiagonally above <strong>and</strong> to the right <strong>of</strong> a tree.(1) 40 feet. Up the wall <strong>and</strong> rightwards to a stance <strong>and</strong> belay ona large block on a sloping ledge.
