Parents engaged in either a ChildFocused intervention of Child Inclusive in one of three Relationships Australia Services inCanberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. There were 275 parents who took part in the study,reporting on 364 children, and 194 of these children (aged 5-16 years) also directlyparticipated in the research.The Child Focused Intervention placed a priority on the psychological and relational elementsof parents’ separation and formulating parenting arrangements best supporting thedevelopmental needs of children. Children were not seen for the purposes of mediation.The Child Inclusive intervention had the same approach and aim but also involved anassessment of children’s experiences of the separation and their relationships with parents.It was reported that entry into mediation was a point of high risk of the groups/families, withboth parents reporting high to very high current acrimony with their former or soon-to-beformer partners. Children also reported high rates of conflict between parents, with one thirdaged 5-16 displaying the clinical range of psychological symptoms (McIntosh andLong, 2006).The outcomes that were found to be common to both types of interventions were (McIntoshand Long, 2006): Significant and enduring reduction in the levels of conflict since mediation.The majority of parents reported improved management and dispute resolution of initialdisputes that had brought them into mediation.Across all age groups, children in both interventions perceived less frequent andintense conflict between their parents, and a significant lowering of their own distressover parental tensions.It was reported that no isolated effects were evident for the Child-Focused intervention atthree or twelve month follow-ups. The Child Inclusive intervention had a number ofassociated effects not evident in the other treatment group, which were reported to bestrongest for fathers and children. It is reported that one-year post intervention showedsignificantly better outcomes in terms of (McIntosh and Long, 2006): Lower acrimony in fathers to their former spouses. Improvement in the parental alliance for fathers.60
