ACTA TECHNICA CORVINIENSIS – BULLETIN of ENGINEERINGWaterfront AreasApparently urban waterfronts, whether naturalor artificial, are now essential ingredients informing a community image, valuable stages forarchitectural display and great places for publicrecreation (Grady Clay, 1998). Manado hassuccessfully built reclamation areas as parts ofurban waterfront development to improveenvironmental quality of seaside area. Majoruses of new spaces are commercial and publicentertainment, meanwhile people adores someoutdoor space for recreation, doing someexercises in the morning, and playing area aspublic amenity.City center, 11park and garden, 72shopping mall, 96cafetaria, 14seaside area, 147Figure 7: Place prefer to spend the leisureSeaside area has a special value of serial visionin the city. Design setting in this area for publicdomain does not need kinds of fixtures exceptbenches faced to the sea. Attractiveness of thesites is panorama of the sea which could interestpeople to join into the place. In bahu mall, theconstruction of promenade along the shorecould increase the environmental quality andsocial function of the place. Meanwhile path andsidewalk in Mega mal were not speciallydesigned for walkers; it was just covering byhard surface for the wheels, which makes theplace become hot during the day. Somebuildings and parking lots are still underconstruction in certain place on the site. Duringthe weekend, mega mal is very crowded in themorning. People used the road and parking lotsfor jogging or doing some sport.Community Open spaceUrbanization process, especially populationgrowth and construction development do notproportionally balance with public spaceprovision for accommodate the communityactivities. Divided into 9 districts official,Manado city has only 2 official public openspaces representing communal space asneighborhood space, they are Singkil andMalalayang. Both are very limited in use also insize. This situation is consequently lead theneighbors, mainly the children, to use other kindof public space like streets and pedestrian way toplay and doing some pleasant things on thedangerous area. Even though the usage anddimension are very limited, people areinterested to visit and expected somepleasurable things from the object. Doing fungames, talking with neighbors, sitting andwatching the kids play are setting of activities inthe object observed. Occasionally, they used forsocial gathering, religious ceremony, musicalconcert, or special events.Tabel.2. ACTA TECHNICA CORVINIENSIS – BULLETIN of ENGINEERINGCONCLUSION AND RECOMENDATIONThis paper analyses the results of aninvestigation in Manado city, North Sulawesi,into local citizens aspirations for different typesof urban open space related to the socialfunctions. The result will serve in theimprovement of urban design decision formaking renovation of some public space designwhich will contribute urban greenery systemplanning in Manado city.In case of Manado, limitation of number andvarious activities are caused by spatial conditionwhich could not represent the real need ofusers. Some activities are taken in wrong placeslike playing on the parking area or on the street.Some elements of public open spaces areproperly unused and inattentive while someother are over capacity, like pedestrian andpaving for doing exercises. Public open space ispublicly accessible open space which includesstreets, civic spaces and parks. Well-designedand managed public space is an integral part ofthe character, economic attractiveness anduniqueness of a place. The quality of publicspace plays a major role in the economic, socialand environmental sustainability of our cities.According to UU no 27/2007, Indonesiaregulation on spatial planning, 30 % of urbanland use area should be reserved for urbangreenery system. Thus will consequently lead toplanning the open space not only as acomplementary object, but included in the mainsystem in planning and management of urbanland area.DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONBrief description of design and/or amenitychanges recommended to improve the qualityof settings as a place for people to use and enjoyin Manado open space are:Quantitatively, urban open space, mainlyneighborhood space, should be providedand well distributed in each cluster ofhuman settlement in appropriate sizeneeded and suitable density of population.One focus in one place could avoid visualcomplexity in urban plaza.
