<strong>ACTA</strong> <strong>TECHNICA</strong> <strong>CORVINIENSIS</strong> – BULLETIN <strong>of</strong> ENGINEERINGCONCLUSION AND RECOMENDATIONThis paper analyses the results <strong>of</strong> aninvestigation in Manado city, North Sulawesi,into local citizens aspirations for different types<strong>of</strong> urban open space related to the socialfunctions. The result will serve in theimprovement <strong>of</strong> urban design decision formaking renovation <strong>of</strong> some public space designwhich will contribute urban greenery systemplanning in Manado city.In case <strong>of</strong> Manado, limitation <strong>of</strong> number andvarious activities are caused by spatial conditionwhich could not represent the real need <strong>of</strong>users. Some activities are taken in wrong placeslike playing on the parking area or on the street.Some elements <strong>of</strong> public open spaces areproperly unused and inattentive while someother are over capacity, like pedestrian andpaving for doing exercises. Public open space ispublicly accessible open space which includesstreets, civic spaces and parks. Well-designedand managed public space is an integral part <strong>of</strong>the character, economic attractiveness anduniqueness <strong>of</strong> a place. The quality <strong>of</strong> publicspace plays a major role in the economic, socialand environmental sustainability <strong>of</strong> our cities.According to UU no 27/2007, Indonesiaregulation on spatial planning, 30 % <strong>of</strong> urbanland use area should be reserved for urbangreenery system. Thus will consequently lead toplanning the open space not only as acomplementary object, but included in the mainsystem in planning and management <strong>of</strong> urbanland area.DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONBrief description <strong>of</strong> design and/or amenitychanges recommended to improve the quality<strong>of</strong> settings as a place for people to use and enjoyin Manado open space are:Quantitatively, urban open space, mainlyneighborhood space, should be providedand well distributed in each cluster <strong>of</strong>human settlement in appropriate sizeneeded and suitable density <strong>of</strong> population.One focus in one place could avoid visualcomplexity in urban plaza.
