some distinctive features remain, with the occasional original shop frontage still intact,the cumulative impact of these alterations over time has eroded the character andquality of the Conservation Area quite considerably.4.34 In the recent past, a frontage improvement scheme has been employed in part of theConservation Area, including some of the older buildings in the area, 217 to 239Newcastle Street (the Seven Sisters). Whilst this has been successful in bringing thebuildings back into use, the detail of the improvement works has created quite a poorprecedent in terms of heritage restoration/recreation, which will need to remedied atsome stage in the future4.36 The majority of properties, particularly the vacant units, are protected by rollershutters, concealing the shop frontages and forming a hostile elevation that lacksdepth and character of gateway route to the town centre11

Generally these unplannedspaces do not add to the setting or character of the Conservation Area and blur thedistinction between public and private.4.42 Most of the Conservation area is characterised by gently sloping topography, howeverthe gradient steepens noticeably in the western part of the area, on approach toBurslem. This affects accessibility into the town centre from the area.12
