2. The Study Area2.1 Middleport, Longport and Dale Hall sit to the west of the edge of Burslem, the mothertown of the potteries. It is an area of commercial and retail uses surrounded byresidential and industrial properties. The Conservation Area sits along the line ofNewcastle Street and takes in only those properties which sit directly onto the road.Map 1: Yates 1775 map of the area (www.thepotteries.org)2.2 Historically the surrounding area has been used for terraced residential propertieshousing workers for the local industries of tile making, mining and pottery manufacture.2.3 This Conservation Area was declared in 1992 in response to a request from residentsand the Potteries Heritage Society. The original proposed boundary of theConservation Area was extended as the importance of the area was realised. It isbased on a series of mid to late 19 th century commercial properties which maintain analmost continuing frontage along the street. This creates strong townscape characteralong the length of the Conservation Area.5
