<strong>2005</strong>South African National ParksKRUGER NATIONAL PARK (KNP)OVERVIEWAs per the norm, KNP carried out its conservation mandate with distinctionduring the period under review and numerous new initiatives were developedand executed with emphasis on nature-based activities.Programmes such as Take Kruger to Kassie were launched in an effortto address local communities’ needs while exposing and amplifying theparks’ benefi ts to the affected communities. Overall, KNP has performedwell within the parameters of the Vision and Mission of <strong>SANParks</strong>.PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONA total of 11 groups of high profi le local, national and internationalguests, including delegations from Malaysia, Munich, Tanzania, Angolaand USA Congressmen were hosted during the period under review, aswell as the organising of 17 functions which were staged in the park.The period under review saw no fewer than 39 media releases on keyand pertinent issues sent out and this generated a huge amount ofpublicity for the KNP.Eight shows and exhibitions were attended during this period. A verygood working relationship with the SABC was established during theperiod under review. As a result four outside broadcasts by local SABCradio stations were hosted in the park. A total number of 6,114 guestswere served by the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA)offi ce during the period under review.The internal news bulletin, Lesedi, has continued to be an effectivetool to disseminate corporate news and announcements throughoutthe park.SCIENTIFIC SERVICESDuring this period, there were 160 active research projects in the KNP,of which 70% were conducted by South African scientists while a totalof 26 local and 30 international research and academic institutions wereactive in the KNP. Their activities resulted in 26 scientifi c publicationsand six internal reports being produced.A very successful 4th annual Scientifi c Networking Meeting in Skukuzaduring the month of March <strong>2006</strong>. A total of 204 international scientistsand students attended the meeting and 80 presentations were made onresearch currently being conducted in or around the KNP.Population estimates of some of the larger mammals in the KrugerNational Park according to the census conducted in September andOctober <strong>2005</strong> are depicted in the table on the next page:44
