<strong>2005</strong>South African National ParksCAPE PARKS CLUSTERPEOPLE AND CONSERVATIONThe Kids in Parks programme was initiated in the park with the preferredsite being the Bosheuwel area.Work still has to be done on the necessary ablution and sleeping facilitiesdependent on an approved budget. Examples of similar facilities havebeen obtained from Kgalagadi and can be used with minor adjustmentsto suit the area’s climat conditions.BONTEBOK NATIONAL PARKOVERVIEWThe Bontebok National Park remains the smallest park within the<strong>SANParks</strong>’ custodianship and only covers an area of 3, 475ha No. landwas acquired during the period under review.Through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), rehabilitationwork including the demolition of old staff accommodation and the removalof dangerous and/or redundant material such as wires and droppers fromthe fi eld was conducted in the park during the period under review.During this period, an amount of R374,797,55 was spent on wages forthe contractors - this was part of <strong>SANParks</strong> mandate as informed byDEAT. Through this programme, the Park has created over fi ve SMMEsranging from labour consultants to small building contractors. So far,through the EPWP alone, over R1,3Million has been spent on SMMEs.Moreover, about a fi fth of that has been spent on small and emergingcontractors.Tender processes for the construction of a link road, installation of bulkservices (water and electricity) and the rest camp re-construction wereconducted during January and March <strong>2006</strong>, but the tender was notawarded during that period due to tender prices being over the projectsbudget. However, planning of such projects, including environmentalimpact assessment studies and other professional work prior to thecommencement of the above-mentioned projects, were conductedduring the <strong>2005</strong>/<strong>2006</strong> fi nancial year.CONSERVATIONWildlife ManagementThe “sarcoid” virus in the Cape Mountain Zebra continued to be evident,but progress in addressing this challenge was attained. Some 40 Bontebokwere captured and released on different farms within the Western CapeRegion in <strong>2005</strong>.52
