2005South African National ParksGRASSLAND/NORTHERN CLUSTERMAPUNGUBWEOVERVIEWThe current size of the Mapungubwe National Park (MaNP) is 19 619ha andit will be a projected 27 702ha once the park has been fully consolidated.Negotiations for the farms Samaria 3 and 4 is well advanced and negotiationshave been initiated for the farms Machete and Weipe.One of the shareholders of the Zita Mine showed interest in exchangingthe Zita Mine (now defunct) for a section of Riedel, or selling it. The farmSamaria 0,1 has been acquired by SANParks. The owner still has farmingrights until December 2007. SANParks still has to decide what to dowith the existing infrastructure and farming operation.PPF will be selling Rhodesdrift to De Beers. SANParks will continue tomanage the land. Funding was approved for acquiring land in MaNP,however it seems as if some of the farms may be beyond our fi nancialmeans, and different avenues need to be investigated for includingcritical farms.CLIMATIC CONDITIONSTABLE 01. Limited game die-offswere reported. The Sashe and Limpopo Rivers started fl owing again inDecember 2005. The park still has numerous active fountains, but theyare clearly weakening. Since November 2005 there has been averagerainfall, and the veld has recovered well.82
2006South African National ParksCONSERVATIONImpala numbers were reduced during September 2005, with 437animals removed. Game counts which were conducted duringSeptember 2005 still refl ect substantial Impala numbers. Combinedwith high Elephant numbers, this does not bode well.PEOPLE AND CONSERVATIONA Park Steering Committee exists with the Musina and Alldays LocalCouncils. This was set up for the Poverty Relief Projects. The Peopleand Conservation post is still vacant, while the Park Forum was offi ciallyappointed by EXCO.The Impala numbers might need to be reduced during the next fi nancialyear. The Wildebeest, Zebra and Eland numbers are also very high.Wildebeest, in particular, will possibly need to be reduced.An Elephant Monitoring Project was initiated to establish damage tovegetation by Elephants moving into the park from Botswana. Thisproject is critical for elephant management and the establishmentof the TFCA. A project to monitor Baobab trees has also beenimplemented.The White Rhinos are regularly tracked to check condition and are stillgenerally doing well. A Sable reintroduction program is also plannedfor 2006/07 fi nancial year.An indigenous plant nursery was established for rehabilitation of disturbedareas and concluded. The young plants are being used for the currentround of projects. A student from the University of Potchefstroom willbe doing his Master’s on the rehabilitation project.TOURISMTourism levels are more or less as expected. Percentage differencesare meaningless for this year, since this is a newly launched park witha number of new facilities.A number of marketing initiatives has been started, most notably theMapungubwe Route, in conjunction with the local lodge operators.Recently De Beers made funds available to develop this further, andthe expanded route was launched on 03 March 2006. A number ofarticles have appeared in a wide range of newspapers and magazines.The percentage of Black day visitors is very high (62%), with the nextbest park only starting at 19% (Kruger).However, the Trails Camp has been doing particularly badly, with littleor no bookings. Both trails rangers have resigned as a result.
