216Fortunately, the breeding population is only one aspect <strong>of</strong> gene resourcemanagement. Rowl<strong>and</strong> Burdon developed a pyramid that conceptualizes therole <strong>of</strong> the breeding population in gene resource management (Figure 1). Thehorizontal axis represents genetic diversity <strong>and</strong> the vertical axis representsgenetic gain. The gene resource population represents all <strong>of</strong> the available geneticvariation that could contribute to the breeding population. This includes nativest<strong>and</strong>s, provenance trials, seed orchard parents, progeny in progeny tests, <strong>and</strong>operational plantations. The next level is the breeding population, which musthave sufficient genetic variation to maintain genetic gain for multiple generations.It tends to be more improved than the gene resource population. At the top isthe production population, consisting <strong>of</strong> seed orchard c<strong>and</strong>idates or clones usedfor operational deployment.
