At least <strong>Carlyle</strong> devoted tothe * Denli-wiirdigkeiten,' as well as to the formerwritings <strong>of</strong> Varnhagen relating to his wife Eahel, along article in the London and Westminster Review'(1838). Subsequently the connection became importantfor both these men. After the death <strong>of</strong>Goethe <strong>Carlyle</strong>'s personal relationsto Germany werealmost confined to occasional and withal rare meetingswith Germans living in London. He received,from time to time, letters and messages from Germany,but they were, as he wrote to Emerson, <strong>of</strong> nogreat moment. When the message <strong>of</strong> Varnhagencame, the * History <strong>of</strong> the French Revolution ' wasabout to be published, and the trouble <strong>of</strong>supervisingthe press, as well as the preparation <strong>of</strong> his lectures onthe German literature, may have retarded the answerto Varnhagen's letter. But at length he wrote;and thus the apostle <strong>of</strong> German genius and Germanliterature in England entered into direct communicationagain with a German writer, and with thatwriter who was in the very centre <strong>of</strong> the Hterary lifein Germany at that time. Thence a continuouscorrespondence arose, yet which was maintained byoccasional messages from both sides. Varnhagensent to <strong>Carlyle</strong> the later volumes <strong>of</strong> his *Denkwiirdigkeiten' and other German books the latterwas in need <strong>of</strong>; <strong>Carlyle</strong> sent to Varnhagen hiswritings and autographs <strong>of</strong> English authors andpublic men, for autographs became more and more
