The ambitions, and thelimitations of this studyThe goal of this study —and particularly the updatesthat we’ve continued to make to it afterits initial presentation at the Tools of Changeconference in Frankfurt in October 2011— is topursue a mapping process of internationalebook markets and to provide details and insights for abetter understanding of those challenges and opportunities.The current update of this report, now rebranded asGlobal Ebook report, is the second edition published directlyby Rüdiger Wischenbart Content and Consulting,after O’Reilly Media generously decided to handing overthe rights to do so after deciding to discontinue the Toolsof Change conference series.This study primarily dwells on data, reporting, and researchdone by others, adding original research only onsome key aspects (such as the chart A Bookish Elite, comparingbook markets within a global framework of key parameters,or a comparison of ebook pricing issues in Europe).The main ambition is to summarize, condense, and —withthe aim of comparing trends and developments— framethe status quo and strategic perspectives with regard toglobal ebook markets. (It is more and more significant thatthe plural markets is used here, as compared to the initial2011 study.)From the very beginning, we had highlighted a variety oflocal actors, be they involved, as independents or conglomerates,in ebook publishing, or act as aggregators,distributors or other service providers, or launch readingand writing community platforms. This section has nowbeen transformt into a new section, branded as eBook YellowPages, as we believe that such references and orientationwill be critical in the next stages of the digital journey.Descriptions of earlier developments reaching back to2011 and even 2010 have now been been eliminated, yetwill be made available, as an archive, by fall 2014.The ambition is not, and cannot be, to track every ebookmarket development worldwide. We are very much awareof the incompleteness of the report in both geographicaland thematic regards. Japan and Korea are missing fromthis study, as is a chapter on the digitization of educationalmaterials, to name just a few blind spots.Fundamentally, we can hardly refer to any useful globalmap of the ebook business, or to reliable definitions ofidentifiers and parameters.In this new update, however, we have started to include anumber of comparative tables and charts, as we are convincedof the importance of such an exercise.We think that the data and approaches that we could introducejustify the bold first stept, even as we are awarethat these elements are still fragile. We very strongly encouragecritical feedback on these parts (and on the reportaltogether). Most importantly, this is also about starting tocome up with working definitions on how to frame, forinstance a percentage of market share of ebooks, as thevalues can relate to a total market, to trade, or just a segmentof new titles, or even a genre, and each of these termslack a firm definition. Based on this edition as a test run,our goal will be to come up with a framework of moreclearly cut parameters, definitions, and measures, with thefall 2014 update of this report.The Global eBook Report 6
