Victoria School: MSI Unit Curriculum• the use of cues and prompts, faded over time as pupils become morecompetent and confident. Pupils move from working co-actively (as one withan adult) to working co-operatively (where each contributes to the sameactivity) to working reactively (separately but alongside each other).• a cross-curricular approach to lesson planning which supports thedevelopment of generalisation by presenting the same concept many timesin different contexts. The cross-curricular approach also reduces problems ofprompt-dependency and context-dependency.• at later stages, the use of wider school resources, in terms of specialist staff, equipment and environments and the inclusion of MSI Unit pupils with thosefrom the main school or other nearby schools for specific activities. The use of these approaches is supported by the availability of:• a high staff:pupil ratio (at least 2:3);• a system of keyworkers for each pupil, to enable the development of trustingrelationships and effective communication.Staff from a range of disciplines (educational, therapeutic, medical) worktogether to plan and deliver programmes for individual pupils. Effectivetransdisciplinary working is central to meeting pupils’ complex needs (see‘Working together: Making it work’, by Heather Murdoch, PMLD Link 18,1 Spring2006).21
