MSI Unit Curriculum: Phase 1Initially Saima kept hand-under-handcontact with her keyworker while sheexplored the textures and objects in herinteractive space.She gradually became confident enough toexplore on her own, at first checking regularlythat her keyworker was still within reach. Latershe came to recognise her keyworker’s voicefrom several metres away and to be happy withvocal contact.Saima has a very delicate, focused use oftouch—here, she is using the back of herhand to explore the radiator grille. Her rangeof strategies for tactile exploration grew asshe encountered a variety of objects.Saima’s sense of security in herinteractive space allowed her to relaxand rest there when necessary—whenshe felt unwell, for example, or needed abreak from using her residual senses.35
