MSI Unit Curriculum: Phase 3Single changes to routines are regularly introduced and pupils’ responsescarefully noted. Changes are explained to pupils (for example, a teaching room isneeded for a performance). Explanations generally need to be supported by nonverbalcues, such as visiting the room and seeing the other activity within it.When pupils are generally confident with one change, two changes areintroduced (for example, carrying out a small group activity with one fewer pupilthan usual and in a different part of the classroom). Changes are chosen tomimic those which may occur naturally and unavoidably, for instance throughstaff and/or pupil absence. Pupils’ reactions are closely monitored, and they aregiven as much support as necessary.Staff are alert for actions by pupils which change routines in some way; these areusually followed through. The teaching approaches used at Phase 3 include routine mismatch (delayingor altering the next step in a routine), and working with pupils in pairs or groups, which increases the likelihood of routine breakdown.74
