46 4 Input and outputThe PFIRST option controls what happens before the caption is displayed, It hassettings:pageto start the caption on a new page, dotsto precede it by a line of dots (or a horizontal"rule" if the output is in rich text, andoutprintto give either dots or a new page according to thesetting for the current output channel (see theOUTPUT directive). The example below displays 'Next analysis' as a major title in GenStat's rich-textstyle of output, using the default font settings.4 CAPTION 'Next analysis'; STYLE=majorNext analysisIn GenStat's plain-text output, it would look like this4 CAPTION 'Next analysis'; STYLE=majorNext analysis=============The rich-text ouput changes automatically to take account of any changes to the fontsettings for major captions that the user might have selected using the Fonts and Colourstab of the Options menu in GenStat for Windows (Figure 1.18).The rich-text output also recognises a sub-syntax, introduced by the special charactertilde (~), that allows you to generate Greek characters and mathematical symbols. Inplain-text output, character versions are given instead. For example, the string'~{alpha}' is printed as á in rich-text, but as alpha in plain-text. So, again you do notneed to worry about how the user has configured the Output window. The rules can befound in Section 1.4.2 of the Guide to the GenStat Command Language, Part 1 Syntaxand Data Management or in the on-line help for PRINT.The PAGE directive moves to the top of a new page, and the SKIP directive cangenerate blank lines. For exampleSKIP [FILETYPE=output] 3gives three blank lines. We need to set option FILETYPE=output, as the default actionfor SKIP is to skip lines in an input file.PRINT, CAPTION, PAGE and SKIP should handle most of the straightforwardsituations. GenStat's commands for text manipulation can be used to construct morecomplicated types of output; details are in Section 4.7 of the Guide to the GenStatCommand Language, Part 1 Syntax and Data Management.4.9 PracticalDisplay the caption Counts of bacteria on pea and cereal crops, and then print thebacteria data from Practical 2.2, using zero decimal places for the counts.
