Click on the AddData Folder button and then on OK tomake the folder your working directory.1.1 Menus and windows 5We shall read some data from a fileIron.dat in the Data folder. This is anASCII, that is, an ordinary text file. Sowe click on the ASCII file sub-option ofthe Load option of the Data menu on themenu bar (Figure 1.8) to open the menuto Read Data From ASCII File (Figure1.9).The menu has a Browse button thatyou can use to locate the file, or you cantype the file name into the field at thetop of the left-hand side of the menu.(Notice that we do not need to type thepath of the file, as we have made theData folder our default directory.) Oncethis has been done, the box on the righthandside of the menu shows the firstfew lines of the file.Files like these are easiest to read ifthe data variables are arranged incolumns, with the names of thevariables in the first line. We can thencheck the box to Read Column Namesfrom File, instead of having to type theFigure 1.7Figure 1.8Figure 1.9names into the menu (notice that the box Names for Data Columns is greyed out when thebox is checked). Figure 1.9 shows that the file has data for four variables: sample, site,FE and weight. We have also checked the box to Automatically Group Data, and entered15 as the Maximum Number of Categories.When we click on Open, GenStatcounts the number of distinct valuestaken by each variable and, if that is lessthan 15, it pops up a menu so that wecan choose whether or not to make thatvariable a factor. In the iron data,sample has only 12 different values.To make it a factor we leave the radiobutton in Figure 1.10 at its default Figure 1.10setting, define as factor, and click on OK.The variable site has only six values,and we can make that into a factor in a similar way.In Figure 1.9 we checked the boxes for all the display categories, to generate the outputbelow.
