We speculate that <strong>the</strong> scarpparallel (longitud<strong>in</strong>al) course of <strong>the</strong> Nepean River may have developed when a proto-river, flow<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> an easterly direction down this develop<strong>in</strong>g slope, was captured by <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g rift shoulderrelat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Tasman Sea (ca. 95–100 Ma, Colwell et al. 1993).39
