This mode is used when the aircraft ismaking an approach to an airfield or a carrier until thepilot has visual contact with the field.TACTICAL DISPLAY SYSTEM(NON-HUD)Learning Objective: Recognize componentsand functions of a non-HUD tactical displaysystem.The AN/ASA-82 TDS is installed on the S-3aircraft. This system is representative of ASWtactical display systems in use by the Navy.The AN/ASA-82 consists of five indicators and adigital-to-analog converter. The digital-to-analogconverter is commonly called a “display generatorunit” (DGU). Three of the indicators aremultipurpose displays (MPDs), which, with a fewexceptions, can display all pertinent mission datadeveloped within the aircraft. These MPDs arelocated at the TACCO (tactical coordinator), SENSO(sensor operator), and copilot stations. Because thecopilot assists the TACCO during an ASW mission,the copilot station is referred to as the COTAC station.At the SENSO station, there is an additional indicatorused to display acoustical data. This is the auxiliaryreadout unit (ARU). The fifth indicator in the systemis located at the pilot’s station. This indicator displaystactical plot data required to maintain aircraft positionwhile the aircrew is searching for or prosecuting asubmarine.PILOT DISPLAYThe pilot display presents the key elements of theTAC (tactical) plot, selected alerts, and peripheralinformation. The data presented on the display isproduced by the GPDC, and is controlled by aircrewmembers through their integrated control system(INCOS) panels. The basic pilot display format isshown in figure 5-18.COPILOT/COTAC DISPLAYThe copilot/COTAC display provides the videopresentations listed below:Alerts and cues for the GPDCTableaus containing GPDC-stored dataTactical plot (TAC plot) composed of symbols,vectors, and conicsFLIR (Forward-looking infrared)MADBTScan-converted radarTest patternsDISPLAY GENERATOR UNITThe display generator unit generatesalphanumeric characters, conics (curved lines), andvectors (straight lines). These graphic symbols aresent to all MPDs and to the pilot’s display. However,the DGU does not send all data types to all displays.The data capabilities of each display will be discussedlater in this chapter. The DGU also positions all videodata in the proper place on the display. Display data isprocessed through four processing channels, whichare interchangeable, to supply the data for the fourcrew stations. When a processor channel fails, it isidentified and reported to the general-purpose digitalcomputer (GPDC) by the operation of the built-in testequipment at each station.Figure 5-18.-Pilot display format.5-15
