An overall check of a computer can be done bythe use of a maintenance program. The maintenanceprogram provides a thorough and rapid method for thedetection of failures in a specific portion of thecomputer. This type of overall maintenance check isflexible and efficient. The programs may use thesame type of tape, memory, computing, and externalstorage media as operational programs. Themaintenance program can be altered when thecomputer or auxiliary components are changed. Theprogram can also be constantly improved. Generally,no extra test equipment is required since the computercircuits are used to perform the test. Testing by meansof maintenance programs results in the computercircuits being used in a more comprehensive mannerthan during normal program execution. When aprogram has been checked and accepted as a goodmaintenance tool, it is not subject to deterioration. Incontrast, test equipment may be checked and acceptedonly to become unreliable shortly after being placedin use.Maintenance programs are divided into two mainclasses: reliability and diagnostic. Maintenanceprograms that are used to detect the existence oferrors are called reliability programs. Reliabilityprograms should be arranged to check as manycomputer circuits as possible.Maintenance programs that are used to locate thecircuits in which computer malfunctions originate arecalled diagnostic programs. An effective diagnosticprogram should locate the source of trouble as closelyas possible. Actually, in many cases, reliabilityprograms have some diagnostic features, just asdiagnostic programs have some reliability features.For convenience, a program is called either areliability or diagnostic program, depending on itsintended emphasis. In general, programs that checkrather than diagnose are shorter and simpler.PERIPHERAL AVIONICS SYSTEMSLearning Objective: Identify peripheralavionics systems and describe theirinteraction with the computer.The aircraft computer is considered the mostimportant avionics system in achieving the mission ofthe aircraft. However, the success of the computerdepends upon its external sensors or other avionicssystems. The quality of data fed to the computerdetermines the quality of data fed out of the computer.The following avionics systems provide inputs to andreceive outputs from the computer: navigation, radar,ordnance/weapons, and data link. These are only afew of the major aircraft avionics systems thatinterface with the airborne computer.NAVIGATIONNavigation systems are designed to tell pilotswhere they are, where they have been, and where theyare going. The TACAN/DME system providesknown station reference points, while an inertialnavigation system provides continuous updating ofsuch information as latitude and longitude. Thisinformation is fed to the computer where it iscompared, updated, and sent out to other systems.SEARCH/TRACK RADARA search radar system is designed to give visualindications of what is around the aircraft. Some of thepresent-day aircraft have a 150-mile or greater range.Depending upon the size and/or speed of the radarindications, a computer can determine whether thetarget is stationary or moving, a land mass or anaircraft, friendly or unfriendly, and many other itemsof information. If a target is determined to beunfriendly, a tracking radar can be used to tell thepilot what to do to eliminate the target.ORDNANCE/WEAPONSThe design characteristics and ballistics of themany types of ordnance, weapons, and missilesrequire the use of a computer to store the information.The airborne computer aids the pilot by tellinghim/her when to release the weapons. The computergreatly increases the pilot’s chances of destroyingdesignated targets.DATA LINKCombat aircraft have to have the most up-to-dateinformation available to successfully completecombat missions. On an aircraft carrier, the combatinformation center, CIC, is normally in constantcontact with an airborne CIC. The airborne CIC isusually an E-2 or P-3 aircraft. These two CICs willcrosstalk by use of the data link system. Basically,data link involves a series of transmitted pulses thatrepresent information. The pulsed information is sentto the computers of all combat aircraft to enhancetheir chances of success.8-16
