The startershould work only in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). Ifthe starter works in any other position, your vehicleneeds service.Brake-Transaxle Shift Interlock (BTSI) CheckWhen you are doing this check, the vehicle couldmove suddenly. If it does, you or others could beinjured. Follow the steps below.2. Firmly apply the parking brake (see “<strong>Park</strong>ing Brake”in the Index if necessary).NOTE: Be ready to apply the regular brakeimmediately if the vehicle begins to move.3. With the engine off, turn the key to the RUNposition, but don’t start the engine. Without applyingthe regular brake, try to move the shift lever out ofPARK (P) with normal effort. If the shift levermoves out of PARK (P), your vehicle’s BTSIneeds service.Steering Column Lock CheckWhile parked, and with the parking brake set, try to turnthe key to LOCK in each shift lever position.The key should turn to LOCK only when the shiftlever is in PARK (P).The key should come out only in LOCK.1. Before you start, be sure you have enough roomaround the vehicle. It should be parked on alevel surface.
