Hawaii/USABranchDirector: Dr. Ivica Zalud | Established: Year 2005Secretary: Dr. Raydeen BusseThe <strong>Ian</strong> <strong>Donald</strong> Inter-University <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medical Ultrasound Hawaii was establishedin 2005 during the first ultrasound conference presented by the Straub Foundation,Hawaii Pacific Health and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu,Hawaii. For this conference, a panel <strong>of</strong> three invited faculty guest (Dr. KURJAK,Dr. CHERVENAK and Dr. PLATT) along with 6 local faculty members from the University <strong>of</strong>Hawaii’s John A. Burns <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Department <strong>of</strong> OB/GYN and Women’sHealth served as lecturers. This highly attended conference exposed the need and interestfor exceptional quality education in OB/GYN ultrasound. Participants were askedto evaluate this conference. Over 140 <strong>of</strong> them gave it outstanding marks and asked forsuch a conference to be held here bi-annually. The next conference was held in 2007and was jointly organized by John A Burns <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine and <strong>Ian</strong> <strong>Donald</strong> <strong>School</strong>Hawaii with full Continuous Medical Education (CME) accreditation. This type <strong>of</strong> educationin the United States requires satisfying very strict rules that must be approvedby the ACCME at the federal level. During the three-day conference, four invited facultyguest (Dr. CHERVENAK, Dr. KURJAK, Dr. PLATT and Dr. POOH) and 10 local faculty membersfrom the John A. Burns <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine discussed cutting edge OB/GYN ultrasoundas well as practical clinical applications. One hundred and fifty participants,mostly from Hawaii but also from the US mainland, Europe, Japan and Australia, evaluatedand gave the faculty panel and the conference high marks for the educationalexperience it provided. Preparations are underway for the third conference to be heldin May 2009.The Hawaii Branch <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ian</strong> <strong>Donald</strong> Family has ambitious plans to be a hub for excellencein ultrasound education, research and clinical application <strong>of</strong> OB/GYN ultrasoundin the Pacific region. Hawaii would like to take advantage <strong>of</strong> its unique positionas the cross roads between East and West and serve as a place where advances in medicalultrasound would connect physicians and other health care providers from theUnited States, the Pacific and Asian nations for betterment <strong>of</strong> women’s health. It is ourhope that Hawaii’s rich history, unspoiled natural beauty, high quality care in OB/GYNand spirit <strong>of</strong> Aloha would blend the best <strong>of</strong> what the <strong>Ian</strong> <strong>Donald</strong> <strong>School</strong> can <strong>of</strong>fer.Honolulu.80
