Cancer Center, the company carried out an MRI upfit in the Center. In another contract in the highereducation area, WBI was awarded the concrete work on the University of Virginia at Wise’s newlibrary.WBI continued to train its field personnel for the demands of its increasingly complex projects. The Claude Wayne Building Institute was built along Alexander Road. Jim Lunsford described it asa place “where people who are willing to work very hard at very challenging work can come to andbuild a prosperous, meaningful future for themselves by learning how to work more effectively andefficiently. We want to build better people, to build better futures, and to build better communitiesas much as we want to build structures better.”We want tobuild better people,to build better futures, and to build bettercommunities as muchas we want to buildstructures better.Even as WBI was focusing its traditional emphasis on training, safety, and innovation, it wasadding a new shareholder and a new area of technology. WBI shareholders Keith Wayne, BobbyPhillips, and John Ashworth, welcomed Chad Hensley as a shareholder of Wayne Brothers. CEOKeith Wayne congratulated Hensley, stressing his “strong business skills, customer-focusedperformance, and impeccable judgment and values are aligned with those of the current equityowners.” Hensley was also promoted to Vice President of Construction Management and assigned tolead the company’s Innovation and Quality Management strategic priorities. Hensley was employedby WBI in 1999 as a Project Manager in Training, then promoted to Senior Project Manager andfinally to Project Executive. Like John Vaughan, Mr. Hensley says that “the people drew me to WayneBrothers; we share so many of the same principles and values. I am proud of what this team hasaccomplished and look forward to what we are going to accomplish in the years to come.”On the technology front, Wayne Brothers announced its own internal web-based collaborationplatform for use by company employees. “Yammer,” as the platform is known, allows employees toremain in touch even though project teams may work in other states for extended periods, and gettogether only a few times during the year. Exchanging news of progress on individual projects andinnovative solutions to problems encountered and lessons learned from them, is valuable to otherpersonnel. News of company events helps maintain the bonds between employees in this growingcompany. Daniel Wayne, Director of Technology, says that “with immediate information sharingand discussions, everyone can not only know about what is going on with other projects, but theycan learn from them, all while building a stronger team. It’s open to all employees, and is as easy astaking a picture or typing a short message and posting it.94 EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
WBI used Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC) to constructsix freestanding shear walls at Fayetteville State University(FSU) in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The shear walls onthe building towered to a height of approximately 85 feetand had architectural concrete requirements due to theirpermanent exposure to public view on the outside of thebuilding’s facade.Wayne Brothers used a climbing formworksystem to form and pour each shear wall in fourto five lifts ranging from 14 to 16 feet in height.SCC was placed into the formwork through aport in the bottom of the formworkA Family95
