Although the continued rankings as a fast-growing company in both job creation and risingrevenues were gratifying to company executives, recognition by its peers for the quality of theconstruction work planners and crews were delivering was equally gratifying. At the 13th annualExcellence in Construction Awards banquet in Charlotte, Wayne Brothers won the 2014 Eagle Awardfor its outstanding work on the BB&T Stadium in Charlotte. The Award, presented by the AssociatedBuilders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABC), recognized the outstanding level of quality work onthe challenging ballpark project. CEO Keith Wayne was quick to recognize the contribution of JimRhodes and William Mitchell, Project Managers for the stadium project; Superintendents Josh Akersand Todd Ashworth; and Andrew Love, the Project Engineer. He also stressed that “all employeesinvolved in the project should be proud of their efforts on this undertaking and the wonderfulresults; once again,” he commented, “you safely exceeded everyone’s expectations, and I’m proud toplay on your team!”Even while WBI crews were completing numerous difficult projects, the emphasis on trainingand safety continued. To carry out the new goal of having all personnel meet the requirements ofthe OSHA 10 and 30 hour courses, Wayne Brothers hosted numerous Competent Person coursesat the South Campus of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in February and March 2014. WBISuperintendents attended the training, together with Foremen, Project Engineers, Safety Staff, FieldEngineering Manager, BIM Manager and a laborer from the Civil and Infrastructure Group. As a resultof the four courses taught by Scott Day of Safe Day, Inc., twenty-five company employees earnedOSHA 30 Hour certifications, and one employee earned the 10 Hour certification.Safety Director Jason Sisk discussed hazards arising from WBI’s work on the BB&T (CharlotteKnights) Stadium, as well as the steps taken to mitigate the hazards, at the April 2014 meeting ofthe Tarheel Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). The project included WBI’sCivil and Infrastructure Group removing 150,000 cubic yards of dirt, and concrete crews placing11,500 cubic yards of concrete. In addition, 8,000 feet of pipe were laid; 600 tons of rebar and80,000 square feet of wire mesh placed. Some of the hazards outlined by Jason involved the vehicletraffic around the uptown Charlotte site, cranes, mobile equipment, excavations, undergroundutilities, falls, and material handling. To deal with the safety challenges, WBI employees participatedin weekly toolbox safety talks; daily pre-task planning; daily stretch and flex calisthenics; andnumerous safety training classes.In May 2014, Wayne Brothers and Buckner Companies partnered as hosts of a crane inspectioncourse. Chip Pocock of Buckner Companies taught the course, which was also held on the SouthCampus of RCCC. Topics included the OSHA standards related to inspecting, assembling, andA Family101
