A NewCHAPTER FOURHard work and attention to detail netted the company more than 110 new contracts a yearin the first decade of the new century. For seventeen years, Eric and Keith Wayne had made aformidable team, combining their talents for field work and administrative detail and planning tocreate a highly-regarded profitable company. In 2003, the company had almost 300 employeesworking in 26 crews, successfully completing work on a portion of the huge Lowe’s corporateoffices in Mooresville and medical facilities including Greenville Hospital in Greenville, SouthCarolina; High Point Cancer Center, High Point, North Carolina; and Nash General Hospital in RockyMount, North Carolina. Different visions about the best future course for WBI led to discussions in2003 and 2004 about the sale of Eric Wayne’s interest in Wayne Brothers, Inc., to brother KeithWayne, with Keith to operate the company thereafter under the Wayne Brothers (WBI) name, andWBI to lease the “old” shop and offices on Columbus Street from Eric Wayne for a period of threeyears, from May 2004 to April 2007.CHAPTERLike his older brother Isaiah, Daniel Wayne had grown up working around the companyshops during the summer, servicing trucks and heavy equipment, as well as a gaining valuableexperience through a variety of assigned tasks. By age 16, he was working on WBI job sites, aswell as working as a mechanic in the WBI shop. During his Junior and Senior years in High School,Daniel attended school in the morning, and worked in the afternoons at Wayne Brothers. Herecalls that his first WBI project the Abbington Subdivision in Harrisburg, on which he workedas a Grading Equipment Operator. In 2006, he enrolled in Rowan-Cabarrus Community Collegeto complete a 2-year Associate Degree program in Construction Management Technology andqualify for training as a Project Manager. Daniel continued to work full-time at Wayne Brotherswhile attending RCCC full-time at night. He became a Foreman, then a Project Manager inTraining. Working as a Project Engineer, he assisted company Project Managers and completedthe field portion of the Project Manager requirements, becoming a Project Manager himself in July2008.Both Isaiah and Daniel Wayne remember the Sterilite contract in Clinton, South Carolina, asa significant project for Wayne Brothers, as well as a project on which they both worked. DanielAshton Southend, Charlotte, North CarolinaWBI completed the foundations, walls, formwork, floor slabs,and shoring to construct the eleven-story concrete structure.
