President Wayne’s optimistic outlook was grounded in part on anumber of contracts awarded the company in 2010, beginning with asubstantial parking deck award in Florence, South Carolina, at McLeodWest; a major data center project in Forest City, North Carolina, forFacebook; the Boral Composites project, including a combinationcivil, infrastructure and concrete package; and an addition to the DNPmanufacturing facility in Concord, North Carolina.Jim RhodesCivil and InfrastructureGroup ManagerJim Rhodes was born in Asheville,North Carolina and graduated fromAsheville High School in 2000.He earned a Bachelor of ScienceDegree in Civil Engineering with afocus in Construction Engineeringand Management from NC StateUniversity. In 2013, Rhodescompleted the Harvard AlumniAssociation Case Study Classthrough Queen Business School.Rhodes was hired by WayneBrothers in 2005 as a ProjectManager. In 2012, Rhodeswas promoted to the Civil andInfrastructure Group Manager.Rhodes’ key projects managedinclude the Patewood Tunnel,Torrence Creek Crossing, ResidenceInn, Highland Ridge Apartments,BB&T Ballpark, Pavilion Apartmentsand Project Bishop. In October 2010, WBI began the preliminary demolition of theexisting parking lot and subgrade preparation for the project atMcLeod Health in Florence. The scope of work at McLeod includedconstruction of the concrete foundations and the parking decksuperstructure. Project Manager Daniel Wayne reported that the hardwork of the WBI crew was keeping the project ahead of schedule. InFebruary 2011, WBI began another project at McLeod Health, providingthe foundations for a new ICU Tower. The work was especiallychallenging because the new Tower was designed to span overtopthe existing hospital. Thus, the caissons placed by WBI would bearenormous column loads from the first elevated level. The Boral Composites project for Benham Constructors wasmanaged by WBI’s Jim Rhodes in September 2010. It gave WayneBrothers the opportunity to provide combined civil/infrastructure,and concrete services. For some time, WBI executives had beenemphasizing the ability of the company to provide both of thesekey services. The Boral project gave the WBI team the chance todemonstrate that inefficiencies and schedule conflicts could beremoved when one contractor provided both scopes of work. Theproject involved a six-acre site and a 36,000 square foot building.Wayne Brothers was responsible for the mass grading, erosion control, water, storm sewer, fine grading, poured foundations, slab-on-grade,slab-on-metal deck, equipment pads and 50,000 square feet ofconcrete paving.Project Manager Jim Rhodes felt that providing both serviceshelped reduce scheduling conflicts and work-related issues on the62 EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
fast tracked project. His impression was confirmed byBenham’s Site Superintendent, who stated, “I know that thecombination of the two divisions produced better resultsthan anything we could possibly have received from anytwo separate contractors.”Work on the addition to the DNP manufacturingfacility at Concord was designed to allow installation of anew printer line at the facility. WBI began work for KajimaBuilding and Design Group in November 2010, with IsaiahWayne as Project Manager. Again, the project involvedcombination grading and concrete services, with thescope of work including site grading, site utilities, buildingfoundations, equipment foundations, slabs-on-grade andelevated slabs. There were very exacting requirements forextremely flat surfaces to allow proper installation of thenew printers, which the concrete crews were able to meetand exceed. In December 2010, WBI crews began work on ProjectAndale, the new Facebook Data Center, with AdamWeisner as Project Manager, and Isaiah Wayne as SeniorProject Manager. Despite the challenges of winter weather, the team was committed to meeting the requirements ofan aggressive completion schedule and the client’s needs.WBI’s scope of work included building foundations, castin-placewalls, equipment foundations, slabs-on-metaldeck, slabs-on-grade, curbs and housekeeping pads. Theproject used approximately 18,000 cubic yards of concrete. The team’s performance on the initial contract resulted inseveral additional contracts for work at the same ForestCity site.During the first quarter of 2011, WBI began work on aCenter for the Performing Arts at the Virginia Tech campusat Blacksburg, Virginia. The project was noteworthy notonly because it was for a new client, Holder Construction,Fly TowerConstruction for theVirginia Tech Centerfor the Arts...This view showsthe opening thatcreates the visibleportion of the stage. The shoring at theopening is the PeriUp system.63
