Claude Wayne Building InstituteConceptual Drawingstrainers have an opportunity to assess each student’s retentionand use of what they have been taught. They can fairly judge thestudent’s potential as a competent member of a team of workerswho work closely together and are dependent in part on each otherin completing the assigned tasks safely. The outdoor lab also serves as a stimulus to another vision thatKeith Wayne has for the property: the construction of a trainingcenter that would not only be used to train WBI employees, butcould be made available to other disciplines, such as plumbers andelectrical trades that might wish to train their craft workers andteach them how to perform their jobs more efficiently and safely. There are other planned uses for the headquarters site thatare likely to be completed within the next few years, and includean equipment washing facility and a Finishing Division OperationsCenter, which would provide shelter for the equipment used by theFinishing Group which is now stored on vehicles and in the open.Wayne realizes that future uses for the headquarters propertywill be dictated, at least in part, by economic movements andtrends. When company planners meet in 2016 to develop asuccessor to the 2013 – 2016 Strategic Plan, they will have WBI’sperformance results for the coming year, as well as national andindustry-specific projections. They will also continue working ona Management Succession Plan to ensure that provisions are inplace to allow a smooth transition of decision-making authority toanother generation of leaders. That generation will include the sonsof the founder, Isaiah and Daniel Wayne, who have recently becomeowners of an interest in the company. They have been raised withthe Wayne work ethic firmly in place, in addition to some innateproblem-solving ability stemming from their mountain heritageand pride. They have been reared on their father’s commitmentto providing quality and value to customers, not only because it isgood business but because it is the right thing to do.114 EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
In announcing the addition of Isaiah and Daniel Wayne as shareholders, President and CEO KeithWayne stated that “the time has arrived for the second generation of family members, who like theother shareholders have been trained to understand the full range of construction skills required inorder to be successful, to come on board as equity members of the business over the next severalyears.” He also announced that it was planned that Isaiah and Daniel would own the majorityinterests of the company at or before his full retirement, through a planned purchasing of his interestover the coming years.”For himself, the CEO sees years ahead in a company he loves, doing work which he can takepride in, work that grows increasingly demanding and complex. He does not feel that he hascompleted his work at WBI and is excited to be currently working with the Executive Team incrafting the company’s five-year strategic plan. He can envision a time, however, when the youngexecutives in whom he has placed his confidence are ready to assume the daily conduct of companybusiness, and in which he can assume senior statesman status, but remain available to share hisexperience and judgment. “I think there will come a time,” he says, “when I will want to have timeto share some of the things I’ve learned with others who are in business or want to be in business, and with other people who want to improve the lives of their neighbors. I love this business, whichhas been so good to me, and the people I’ve met and worked with; I hope at some point to take thelessons they have taught me and leave something behind as solid as the great buildings for whichwe have poured foundations.”In the meantime, Mr. Wayne thinks that if company growth continues at the present rate, thefuture may see the addition of more shareholder partners, provided they have the character andintegrity to allow them to build on the core principles of safely providing value to WBI customers. Hemodestly attributes his success to his having been surrounded by good partners, good employees,I hope at somepoint to take thelessons they havetaught me andleave somethingbehind as solidas the greatbuildings for whichwe have pouredfoundations.Wayne Brothers, Inc.ShareholdersKeith Wayne, Daniel Wayne,Isaiah Wayne, John Ashworth,Chad Hensley, Bobby PhillipsThe Next115
