Looking AheadWBI entered 2014 on a strong safety note. Safety Director Jason Sisk celebrated two full years(more than 1.6 million hours) of work without a Lost Time incident! The achievement was even moreremarkable in light of the growing workforce and the increase in difficult, challenging companyprojects. In October 2013, Jason Sisk accepted the Gold STEP Safety Award from Cherie Berry, NCLabor Commissioner, on behalf of the company, in recognition of its excellence in safety. The SafetyTraining and Evaluation Process (STEP) was established in 1989 to recognize employers dedicated toprotecting the safety of their employees through training and closely-followed safety protocols.Wayne Brothers was also widely recognized for its rapid growth coming out of the recession. WBIwas ranked #23 by the Charlotte Business Journal’s 50 Fastest Growing Companies, based on revenuegrowth from 2010 to 2012. Business North Carolina ranked WBI #4 in its NC Mid-Market Fast 40, themagazine’s ranking of the fastest growing companies in the state, moving up from #7 the previousyear. The company was also honored as the “Subcontractor of the Year” for 2013 by the CharlotteChapter of the Construction Financial Management Association.The data center market continued to provide additional work for WBI crews in 2014. The scope ofwork in the ongoing data center projects in both Carolinas was expanded; in addition, the companybegan a new project in North Carolina. There was new work in the energy area, with an expandedcontract for work at VC Summer Nuclear Facility and with ongoing natural gas projects. WBI beganwork on two lumber mill projects and, despite the distances involved, accepted a contract in Texas.Company crews were winding up their work on the BB&T Stadium, while the Civil and InfrastructureGroup was awarded the site development contract for the Woodfield Apartments.Wayne Brothers had successfully completed its scope of work at the Virginia Polytechnic InstitutePerforming Arts Center in Blacksburg, Virginia, when it was notified that it was awarded the VirginiaChapter 2013 ACI Commonwealth Award for Excellence in Concrete Construction. Concrete wasone of the major construction components of the beautiful 147,000 square foot structure. Companyshareholder and Vice-President Bobby Phillips, an alumnus of VPI, together with Scott Ashworth,Superintendent for the project, accepted the Award on behalf of the company at the March 6, 2014,Virginia Concrete Conference.Work done by the concrete placement and finishing crews on the Continental Tire facility inSumter, South Carolina, earned the company a Silver Trowel Award at the World of Concrete in LasVegas, Nevada. Finishing Group Manager Scott Ashworth shared the accolades with SuperintendentA Family97
