Notices about home education were placed in the
Back to School supplement in regional newspapers at
the beginning of the year.
Home educator get-together/information sessions
were held in November in both Launceston and
Hobart. Both were well attended.
Support for home educating families
Development of the Australian Curriculum continued
to be monitored to gauge any impact for home
educators.
THEAC supported, and represented with attendance
by council members and staff, a statewide family
picnic which was organised by local home educators.
This was held at Ross on 6 March 2010 and was very
well attended.
Many home educators continued to use resources
from the Department of Education’s Distance
Education Tasmania (now Tasmanian eSchool) to
supplement their programs.
Forty-five home educated children registered for
the 2010 National Assessment Program – Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN).
Five newsletters were published for home educators
over the year. These newsletters provided information
updates and were used to continue a supportive liaison
between THEAC and home educators.
A submission was made to the Transitional CEO
Population Health, Department of Health and Human
Services concerning the inequity of access experienced
by home educators in the areas of access to speech
pathology services, access to government school
social workers, access to pathway planners for career
counselling and access to the Training and Apprenticeship
Program (TAPP).
The chair and one council member met with Centrelink
officers to continue discussions on implications for 16+
year-old home educated children arising from changes
to Centrelink Youth Allowance requirements.
Financial report
THEAC utilises the services of an accountant to
prepare relevant financial documents with a THEAC
member maintaining the treasurer’s position.
An audited financial report for the period July 2009
to June 2010 has been presented to the Minister for
Education.
