ADULT PROGRAMS<br />

❂ ESL: ADULT EDUCATION/CULINARY ARTS<br />

ESL<br />

ADVANCED BEGINNING: This class will accommodate the<br />

person with limited English skills as well as the person with limited<br />

English proficiency. Reading, writing, listening comprehension <strong>and</strong><br />

spoken English will be taught. INTERMEDIATE: The purpose of<br />

this class is to teach grammatical structures for spoken English, as<br />

well as improving reading, writing <strong>and</strong> listening comprehension.<br />

ESL: ADULT EDUCATION<br />

There are no resident requirements for adult education classes or services. Adults have priority for enrollment in all adult education<br />

programs. Adults are 18 years <strong>and</strong> older.<br />

in the upper parking lot near the church office.<br />

CAKE DECORATING III-<br />

FONDANT AND TIERED CAKES<br />

Learn to cover <strong>and</strong> decorate a cake in rolled fondant, advanced<br />

borders, fondant roses, lily nail flowers <strong>and</strong> two tiered cakes. Prerequisite:<br />

Basic Cake Decorating I or equivalent experience.<br />

Students 12 <strong>and</strong> older may enroll if accompanied by an enrolled<br />

adult who is present at each class <strong>and</strong> can assist student with their<br />

project. A $5 book fee will be due payable to instructor at first<br />

class. This is a h<strong>and</strong>s-on class from first week, students need to<br />

bring supplies to first class. A short materials list will be on your<br />

registration receipt, on-line at www.lgsrecreation.org, (go to<br />

Adult Classes/Culinary Arts), or faxed upon request.<br />

Instructor: Laurel Cohen. is a master cake decorator that has been<br />

delighting family <strong>and</strong> friends with her cake artistry since she was a<br />

teenager. Her wedding cakes, birthday cakes <strong>and</strong> special occasion<br />

cake sculptures are unique <strong>and</strong> whimsical. Laurel is a graduate of<br />

The Wilton School of Cake Decorating <strong>and</strong> Confectionary Arts <strong>and</strong><br />

attended San Francisco Baking Institute.<br />

DIABETES-FRIENDLY COOKING<br />

Patients, parents <strong>and</strong> caretakers will learn practical skills in<br />

everyday meal preparation for diabetics <strong>and</strong> pre-diabetics.<br />

You’ll find out how to stock a healthful, diabetic-friendly New!<br />

pantry <strong>and</strong> refrigerator. Cecilia will demonstrate efficient<br />

cooking techniques <strong>and</strong> ingredient substitution, with<br />

emphasis on how to make one creative preparation stretch across<br />

several meals. Classes are co-sponsored with the City Of Saratoga<br />

Recreation. Fee includes all supplies <strong>and</strong> you may bring one guest<br />

CULINARY ARTS<br />

CERTIFICATE OF SATISFACTORY PURSUIT<br />

Students will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Satisfactory<br />

Pursuit by attending this recognized program for at least forty<br />

(40) hours in a class appropriate to their skill level, <strong>and</strong> by<br />

demonstrating progress according to the performance st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

of the English language courses. The U. S. Department of<br />

Justice, <strong>and</strong> Immigration <strong>and</strong> Naturalization have approved this<br />

department’s program. Please request this certificate from your<br />

teacher at the conclusion of your class.<br />

class. Warner Hutton House is located at 13777A Fruitvale Ave.,<br />

Saratoga, near the Saratoga Recreation Center.<br />

Instructor: Cecilia Lam. is a cooking <strong>and</strong> nutrition<br />

consultant/teacher for the Diabetes Society <strong>and</strong> owner of Spa Dining.<br />

ULTIMATE CHOCOLATE<br />

TRUFFLES<br />

Come learn to make elegant, dome-shaped truffles with a variety of<br />

luscious fillings including: white, milk <strong>and</strong> dark chocolate. Karen<br />

will show you how to flavor basic recipe ganaches with liqueurs <strong>and</strong><br />

oils. Everyone will make <strong>and</strong> take 12 truffles in a gift box (approx.<br />

one pound) for sharing (or hoarding). You will be given recipes,<br />

notes <strong>and</strong> tips, <strong>and</strong> keep your own truffle molds. Co-sponsored with<br />

City of Saratoga Recreation. NOTE: The classroom in Saratoga is<br />

located in the back of the Saratoga Recreation Center in the Adult<br />

Day Care Center. You must pre-register for this class at least a<br />

week in advance... space is limited! Supplies will be available for<br />

purchase following class. A $12 material fee is payable to the<br />

instructor in class.<br />

the Sacramento area to share her expertise gained from experimentation<br />
