CHINESE HERBS<br />

The use of Chinese herbs in preventing diseases <strong>and</strong> relieving physical<br />

discomforts has been practiced for many centuries. This class<br />

introduces you to the herbs commonly used to strengthen your<br />

body, boost your energy <strong>and</strong> nourish your skin. You will also learn<br />

about the herbs that are known to relieve stress, arthritis, allergy<br />

symptoms <strong>and</strong> more. Because herbs are natural <strong>and</strong> mild, you will<br />

learn how they can be incorporated into regular meals to enhance<br />

nutrition <strong>and</strong> taste. Class is co-sponsored with City of Saratoga<br />

Recreation Dept.<br />

Instructor: John Fung. M.S. Stanford. John is a Consultant to<br />

Health Concerns in Oakl<strong>and</strong>. He has done research on Chinese<br />

herbs for more than a decade <strong>and</strong> co-authored a book entitled,<br />

“Sixty Years in Search of Cures”, with his father, a long-time practicing<br />

herbalist.<br />

CREATIVE MEMOIR WRITING<br />

Learn this intuitive method to unlock your literary potential! Put<br />

the critic aside <strong>and</strong> write ‘non-stop’. Relaxing <strong>and</strong> <strong>fun</strong>, this class has<br />

application to memoir, short story, novel, poetry <strong>and</strong> creative expression.<br />

Weekly lessons teach the ‘craft’ of writing. Guest speakers. All<br />

adults welcome. Parking permits will be passed in class.<br />

Instructor: Lynn Rogers. MA., is the author of BORN IN<br />

BERKELEY, EDGAR CAYCE AND THE ETERNAL FEMININE,<br />

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE, <strong>and</strong> SAN JOSE<br />

ALVISO, a new local history book. A number of her students have<br />

been published.<br />

DIABETES-FRIENDLY COOKING<br />

Patients, parents <strong>and</strong> caretakers will learn practical skills<br />

in everyday meal preparation for diabetics <strong>and</strong> pre-diabetics.<br />

You’ll find out how to stock a healthful, diabeticfriendly<br />

pantry <strong>and</strong> refrigerator. Cecilia will demonstrate<br />

efficient cooking techniques <strong>and</strong> ingredient substitution,<br />

with emphasis on how to make one creative preparation stretch<br />

across several meals. Classes are co-sponsored with the City Of<br />

Saratoga Recreation. Fee includes all supplies <strong>and</strong> you may bring<br />

one guest for no additional fee!! A different menu will be presented<br />

With so much wonderful produce in season during the<br />

summer, the healthy yet delicious meal options are endless.<br />

Eating seasonally is not only great for you, but also great for<br />

the environment. Summer is often a busy time for us <strong>and</strong> it can<br />

be a challenge to eat well while on the go. Learn some tips on eating<br />

healthy: what healthy snack foods to pack, how to shop, what loser<br />

foods to avoid. This two hour interactive talk will go over nutrition<br />

basics: what is a healthy diet, how to get quality protein, healthy fats,<br />

<strong>and</strong> complex carbohydrates into a daily diet that can accommodate<br />

a busy schedule. Easy meal/snack ideas, recipes <strong>and</strong> samples will be<br />

provided.<br />
