NATURE TRIPS ❂<br />
ADULT PROGRAMS<br />
BIG LAKE K AYAK CAMPING TRIP<br />
In far northern California there is a l<strong>and</strong> of towering volcanoes,<br />
stark lava fields <strong>and</strong> crystal clear springs. This<br />
weekend trip will give us a chance to hike <strong>and</strong> kayak this<br />
beautiful area, which is about 5 hours north of San Jose<br />
but a world away. The lake that we will camp on is alive with<br />
wildlife. Rainbow trout, bald eagles, great blue herons, Lewis’ woodpeckers,<br />
coyotes <strong>and</strong> mule deer are some of the species we may see<br />
while paddling the protected waters. Camping is easy with warm<br />
days <strong>and</strong> nights. We will pack our kayaks with overnight gear <strong>and</strong><br />
head off across the lake to a secluded camp. From there we will day<br />
paddle <strong>and</strong> hike to explore this wilderness area. Join us for an active<br />
<strong>and</strong> memorable weekend in a Northern California. This trip is cosponsored<br />
with City of Saratoga Recreation <strong>and</strong> the City of<br />
Campbell Recreation. Informational meeting Wednesday, Aug 22,<br />
7:00PM-9:00PM at Campbell Recreation Center, 1 W. Campbell<br />
Ave., Room E-42. Camping dates are Sat.,Aug. 25 - Sun.,Aug. 26.<br />
A weekend materials fee of $115 per person is payable to Greg<br />
Meyer at the evening class for kayak rental, safety equipment,<br />
group camping gear <strong>and</strong> two meals. Information sheet will not be<br />
mailed, we meet on Wednesday evening to discuss the trip details.<br />

MARINE MAMMALS OF<br />
MONTEREY BAY<br />
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a yearround<br />
location to watch marine mammals. Summer is the<br />
best season to see the greatest variety of whales <strong>and</strong> other<br />
mammals with less chance of rough seas. We will be looking<br />
for sea otters, seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins <strong>and</strong> thous<strong>and</strong>s of<br />
seabirds! Leaving from Monterey, our four to five hour trip will start<br />
along Cannery Row were we watch otters <strong>and</strong> sea lions. From there<br />
we will head 5 - 15 miles offshore to look for feeding humpback <strong>and</strong><br />
blue whales, which are regular visitors to the central coast during<br />
summer. We will also search the deep waters of the Monterey Bay<br />
Submarine Canyon for smaller cetaceans such as dolphins, porpoise<br />
<strong>and</strong> even killer whales. This trip is co-sponsored with the City of<br />
Saratoga Recreation <strong>and</strong> City of Campbell Recreation.<br />

Campbell Comm. Ctr., Rm. E42, located at 1 W. Campbell Ave, at<br />
the corner of Winchester Blvd. <strong>and</strong> Campbell Ave. Bring $40 per<br />
person boat fee, payable to Greg Meyer, to the evening meeting to<br />
cover the cost of chartering the 50 feet boat. Sunday, July 29,<br />

SUNSET K AYAK TRIP AT<br />
ELKHORN SLOUGH<br />
Elkhorn Slough is one of Californias largest remaining coastal wetl<strong>and</strong>s<br />
<strong>and</strong> is home to thous<strong>and</strong>s of birds <strong>and</strong> numerous harbor seals<br />
<strong>and</strong> sea otters. This protected salt marsh is covered with unusual<br />
plants <strong>and</strong> graced with scenic, quiet waterways. We will spend an<br />
afternoon exploring this seven-mile long slough, getting a unique<br />
look at this preserve <strong>and</strong> then paddling home at sunset. This trip is<br />
a great introduction to kayaking <strong>and</strong> no experience is necessary. We<br />
will be using stable, double sea kayaks equipped with rudders <strong>and</strong><br />
comfortable seat backs. Complete kayak instruction will be given<br />
before starting <strong>and</strong> all equipment will be provided. Participants<br />
under 18 must register with <strong>and</strong> be accompanied by an adult. A<br />
Kayak equipment fee of $50 per person (cash or check) for kayak<br />
rental, safety equipment, paddling gear <strong>and</strong> guiding services is<br />
payable to Greg Meyer on the day of the trip. Information sheet<br />

Classes/Nature), printed on the registration receipt or faxed upon<br />
request. Ages 12+ may register if accompanied by a registered<br />

GOVERNING BOARD<br />
Los Gatos-Saratoga <strong>Community</strong> Education <strong>and</strong> Recreation<br />
Notice is hereby given that the Los Gatos-Saratoga Department<br />
of <strong>Community</strong> Education <strong>and</strong> Recreation announces two (2)<br />
positions available on the Governing Board. One member<br />
appointed must reside within the boundaries of the Los Gatos<br />
Union School District. The other member appointed shall serve<br />
“at large,” <strong>and</strong> must reside within the boundaries of the Los<br />
Gatos-Saratoga High School District.<br />
The Department welcomes letters of interest from eligible<br />
individuals. The Governing Board is responsible for policy<br />
development for the Department. Letters of Interest may be<br />
submitted to: LGS Recreation, 123 East Main Street, Los Gatos,<br />
CA 95030. Attention: Michelle Varno. Interest letters should<br />
provide background information on the c<strong>and</strong>idate, why the<br />
c<strong>and</strong>idate is interested in serving on the Board, <strong>and</strong> an address<br />
<strong>and</strong> daytime phone number. Additional information may be<br />
obtained by calling Michelle Varno at 354-8700, Ext. 226.<br />
Interested c<strong>and</strong>idates must be available to attend Board meetings<br />
once per month, scheduled normally the first Thursday<br />
of each month at 8:00 A.M. Meeting dates are subject to<br />
change by action of the Board.<br />
The deadline for receipt of letters of interest is Friday, May 16.<br />
The Governing Board will interview interested c<strong>and</strong>idates at<br />
its regular meeting on Thursday, June 5 at 8:00 a.m.<br />
