在 這 樣 全 情 投 入 地 拍 攝 時 ,Eric 總 是 能 將 他 的 心
靈 化 作 現 實 的 鏡 頭 。 當 他 來 到 緬 甸 拍 攝 , 鏡 頭 對 準
了 一 個 小 男 孩 正 在 接 受 剃 度 的 場 景 , 從 此 這 個 男 孩
將 走 上 一 條 修 行 之 路 , 畫 面 中 充 滿 了 一 種 靜 謐 祥 和
的 氛 圍 。「 在 那 幾 秒 鐘 的 時 間 裏 , 我 開 始 哭 泣 。」
Eric 說 :「 面 前 的 場 景 蘊 藏 著 不 可 思 議 的 情 感 。 周 圍
的 空 氣 中 漂 浮 著 許 多 灰 塵 , 人 們 在 唱 歌 , 色 彩 恰 到
好 處 …… 整 個 場 景 異 常 鮮 活 。」 此 時 ,Eric 感 覺 自 己
不 再 是 一 位 旁 觀 者 , 而 是 成 為 了 儀 式 的 參 與 者 。「 那
時 , 我 有 種 感 同 身 受 的 感 覺 , 我 來 到 了 另 一 個 地 方 ,
發 現 了 我 夢 想 中 的 世 界 的 關 鍵 。」
「 有 那 麼 些 時 刻 , 我 感 覺 像 是 被 催 眠 了 。」Eric
繼 續 回 想 著 當 時 的 情 景 。「 像 是 身 處 在 一 處 風 暴 中 ,
我 發 現 自 己 在 看 著 周 圍 變 幻 的 形 狀 和 色 彩 , 試 著 在 大
風 中 直 立 起 來 。 有 一 個 時 刻 , 我 真 的 忘 記 了 自 己 身 處
何 方 。」 人 們 常 說 ,Eric 的 攝 影 作 品 有 著 一 種 神 秘 的
力 量 , 他 自 己 對 此 不 置 可 否 , 說 自 己 從 小 便 喜 歡 幻
想 , 還 喜 歡 看 魔 術 大 師 胡 迪 尼 的 表 演 。
其 實 ,Eric 十 二 歲 時 曾 想 過 要 追 隨 父 親 的 腳 步 ,
成 為 一 名 醫 生 來 拯 救 生 命 。 可 最 終 他 一 頭 扎 進 暗 房 ,
成 為 了 一 名 攝 影 師 。「 我 父 親 的 一 位 患 者 愛 好 攝 影 ,
他 邀 請 我 去 他 家 , 給 我 看 了 一 些 底 片 。」Eric 談 起 這
段 陳 年 往 事 :「 我 被 黑 暗 的 光 線 和 紅 色 的 燈 光 吸 引 ,
永 遠 也 忘 不 了 看 到 第 一 張 膠 片 沖 印 出 來 的 樣 子 。 前 後
也 就 30 秒 時 間 , 我 決 定 我 將 來 要 做 一 名 攝 影 師 。」
為 了 實 現 夢 想 ,Eric 在 一 家 商 店 裏 找 到 了 第 一 份
工 作 , 做 蘇 打 水 和 三 明 治 。 等 賺 到 了 足 夠 的 錢 ,Eric
急 不 可 待 地 買 了 一 個 照 相 機 , 他 形 容 當 時 的 感 覺 是 ,
世 界 頓 時 處 處 充 滿 了 精 彩 。 一 次 , 全 家 去 羅 德 島 度
假 , 當 時 只 有 十 幾 歲 的 Eric 拍 攝 了 一 張 一 隻 鳥 兒 迎 著
太 陽 飛 翔 的 照 片 , 投 稿 給 了 Audubon 雜 誌 。「 我 幾 乎
都 把 這 件 事 給 忘 了 , 三 個 月 之 後 , 我 收 到 一 封 信 , 雜
誌 準 備 用 我 的 照 片 做 封 面 。 這 對 我 是 莫 大 的 鼓 勵 , 證
明 我 有 能 力 從 事 這 個 職 業 。」
現 在 , 當 Eric 遇 到 新 一 代 的 攝 影 師 , 他 總 是 會 用
「 壯 志 凌 雲 、 腳 踏 實 地 」 這 兩 句 話 來 鼓 勵 他 們 。 因 為
這 正 是 他 自 己 取 得 成 功 的 原 因 , 即 對 攝 影 事 業 永 遠 抱
有 無 盡 的 熱 忱 和 追 求 , 並 願 意 為 之 付 出 畢 生 的 努 力 。
“There’s moments when I feel almost hypnotized by
the beauty around me,” he says. “Like during a storm,
I find myself watching the shapes and the colours
and trying to stand up straight while the wind is
blowing, and can forget for a moment why I’m there.”
If there’s a mystic quality to Meola’s images, one
might attribute it to his childhood fascination with
magic tricks and the illusions of Houdini.
A teenager with a vision
At the age of 12, Eric Meola says he had a clear
epiphany as to his life’s calling. His dad may have
wanted him to follow in his footsteps and be a doctor,
but for Meola, his own career would be decided
in a darkroom.
“One of my dad’s patients had a photography
hobby and invited me over to his house to show me
some of his negatives,” says Meola.
“I was intrigued by the darkness and the red light.
Watching the first print appear in the developer was
a moment I will never forget. It was in those 30 seconds
I decided I would be a photographer.”
With earnings from his first job making sodas and
sandwiches at the local pharmacy, Meola bought a camera.
Suddenly, no place was boring when he had a pocketful
of unexposed film. On a family vacation to Rhode
Island, Meola, then a teenager, observed a flock of
seagulls and shot a silhouette of a bird against the sun.
On a whim he sent that photo to Audubon magazine.
“I’d almost forgotten about it, when three months later
I got this letter that they wanted to use it on their cover.
It was the vindication that I needed. I can do this.”
Today as he meets a new generation of photographers,
he encourages them to approach their career
with “their head in the clouds and their feet on the
ground,” a formula that’s evidently worked for him,
as he still approaches photography with the excitement
of a child.
