It’s Raining Violets
April Showers? Hope not, well, not many. It’s the
middle of March as we put together this piece for the
Advertizer’s April issue, and it’s raining cats and dogs.
The ground outside is sodden and it’s not much fun
working in the wet.
Still, some of the group have had a wander round the village, eyeing up
priority targets for when the weather picks up. And this year’s plants have
been ordered, too. We’re hoping we get everything we asked for. It can be a
bit of a lottery, depending on what the suppliers have got most of, and that
can sometimes make a thoughtfully-planned display look a bit odd.
It’s the season for grant applications, too, and of course the local authority
budgets are under pressure, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for
continuing support from that area. Lots of form-filling to while away the
cold, wet days. We mentioned last month our award of £250 from Keep
Scotland Beautiful. Their Community Grants Scheme is funded by Tesco,
from the money collected by the Scottish Government’s single-use plastic
bag tax. So, the next time you’re in that
supermarket, forking out for a one-off
carrier bag (perhaps, like many of us,
because you forgot to bring one of the shed
load you’ve got at home), remember it‘s in
a good cause.
Still raining outside. Oh well, we’ll just go
and sharpen some secateurs.

Society Annual Show
The schedules for the craft and baking section of Houston and Killellan
Show now available from committee members, The Paper Shop, North

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society
The last of our winter lectures, in March, featured Ian McCrorie presenting
his favourite subject ‘Pleasure and Steamer services on the Clyde and
west of Scotland’. This was a most enjoyable evening, ending our 135th
anniversary with a true sparkle of humour and friendship.
The annual Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 23rd May - a month
later than is usual - in the New
Community Centre, Kilmacolm.
Stalls will include an excellent Plant
stall in time for the summer planting
of tubs and hanging baskets. Also
homebaking and a tombola stall.
Tickets £3.
Look out for emergence of Spring
colours at the Garden at the Cross
of the village, we are planting a few
new shrubs, plus bedding fuchsias
and geraniums and tidying it with
bark top cover.
Members will be enjoying coach
outings this summer, the highlight
is to Dumfries House, an 18th
century house built for the 5th
Earl of Dumfries. It contains a
unique collection of Chippendale
furniture, plus rooms and their
contents lovingly restored with a
rescue team led by Prince Charles
in 2007. Closer to home, we are
invited to visit the Caddlehill Street
Allotments in Greenock in August,
at the height of their growth of top
quality flowers and vegetables. If
