A motion was filed in state district court on behalf of Yossi Galamidi, 35, owner of Blaze Smoke Shop. Blaze was one of two smoke shops raided in May as part of an investigation into synthetic urine being sold. Authorities began looking into smoke shops after Food Mart at 1539 N. Martin Luther King Highway; Smokers Paradise and Spirits No. 1 at 1014 Martin Luther King Highway; Smokers Express at 3501 Gerstner Memorial Drive; and Raceway No. 6946 at 1213 N. The grade-by-grade English and math benchmarks are supposed to be fully phased into Louisiana’s classrooms and testing by the upcoming year. Supporters of Common Core say the standards promote critical thinking and raise expectations for students. Last month, the Calcasieu Parish School Board approved district participation in the Community Eligibility Provision, a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that subsidizes the cost of breakfast and lunch at schools that meet certain criteria. The schools that qualify are Barbe, Brentwood, J.D. Clifton, College Oaks, Combre, Fairview, Henry Heights, J.J. Johnson, M.J. Kaufman, J.F. Kennedy, Oak Park, T.H. Watkins, Pearl Watson and Ralph Wilson elementary schools; Jake Drost Special School; Brenda Hunter Headstart; Molo and Oak Park middle schools; and Washington-Marion Magnet High School. Patricia Hoseman, district food service director, said all students at the 19 schools will eat at no charge and that parents don’t have to fill out any paperwork or applications. Bobby Jindal on the standardized tests used in Louisiana’s public schools next year, but they hit resistance in the continuing dispute over the Common Core education standards. Leaders of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education proposed to use a mix of Louisianaspecific test questions and material aligned to Common Core in the school year that begins next month. They said the approach would address contracting concerns raised by Jindal, while keeping Louisiana in line with its shift to the multi-state standards. “It’s not 100 percent of what he wants,” said BESE President Chas Roemer. “It is a step toward him, and it requires a step from him. But it maintains the academic standards that I would hope every parent in this state would expect their children to have.” But the idea appeared to be a non-starter with the Republican governor, who opposes Common Core and is trying to find ways to end its use in Louisiana’s schools. Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols said the education department’s existing contracts don’t appear to allow for the approach proposed by BESE President Chas Roemer and board leaders. “The Louisiana Department of Education needs to follow the procurement code. We are not at all comfortable for those schools for four years. The 19 schools were a safe choice, she said, in case their “identifiable student” percentages lowered over the next few years. “This way the district is not going to lose any money,” she said. Hoseman said parents at the schools will be able to save money because of the program. Normally, the full cost for a child to eat breakfast for the year is $86; lunch for grades K-5 is about $232 and for grades 6-12 about $254. According to Hoseman, other benefits will include less paperwork for parents and the schools. In addition, the district will not have to account for unpaid charges.
