Coffee roasters are both artist and scientist, vigilantly turning caffeine-laden beans into
delicious, steaming cups with complex flavor. Few libations require as much human effort
as this beloved drink. From harvesting in global locales, to precise flavor development
and ubiquitous coffee shops—the industry is massive. Here are some of Oregon’s
best roasts, with tips to whet your palate.
CHARACTERISTICS
Acidity
Similar to wine, this attribute
keeps the coffee
from tasting flat.
Body
Simply putdepth. A heavier
body helps the coffee
flavors stand up in mixed
drinks, such as lattes.
Aroma
Adds a dimension to the flavor
beyond taste alone.
Flavor
The full package balances the
first three characteristics along
with taste.
BEANS
Arabica
Used in most gourmet
and specialty coffee, these
beans are widely considered
to have the best flavor
profiles, but they are the
most difficult to grow and
take two to four years to
develop for harvest.
Robusta
This plant makes up only
about 2 of coffee trade
but has the benefit of a
shorter year-long growth
cycle and the ability to thrive
where Arabica cannot.
With many great roasters to
choose from, 1859 narrowed
the field down to a few upand-coming
favorites around
the state to help broaden
your coffee world.
passionate discussion around the 1859
