With a throng of bodies of water, including the Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius rivers, the area is a mecca for anglers. In a sport full of tall tales, fly-fishings winner is calculated on the sie and number of fish caught over a multi-day period. On various Central Oregon lakes and rivers, the catchand-release event brings together about 100 anglers who qualified at regional levels. PHOTOGRAPHED: With a former Fly-Fishing Team USA member for a dad, it was only natural that Central Oregon local, Russell Robertson, become a fly-fishing fiend. At ust 7, Robertson has competed in two maor fishing competitions—one of which qualified him for this year's nationals. Robertson is the only local angler slated to compete on his home waters. Fly-Fishing in Oregon Rogue Near Gold Hill, the Upper Rogue's residents are rainbow and cutthroat trout. "Half pounder" steelhead, that spend just six months in the ocean, frequent the lower stretch of river. The Deschutes From Warm Springs to the mouth, the Deschutes offers wild steelhead and rainbow trout fishing all across Central Oregon. Nehalem One of the few rivers with a Coho salmon run, Nehalem is home to many wild and hatchery fish, with fall Chinook known to weigh an average of 20 pounds. Umpqua Discover the beauty of the "flyfishing only" North Fork and heavy steelhead runs. Eagle Cap Wilderness The Minam and Snake rivers are just two of the many backcountry fishing options here, from mountain to canyon.
