Youth’s Proposed Solutions<br />
Policy & System Change<br />
• Ensure the immediate provision of services for youth seeking support for mental health and<br />
addiction issues<br />
• Reduce wa<strong>it</strong> times to access in-patient addiction and mental health services for youth<br />
• Abolish policies that require parental permission for youth to access addiction or mental<br />
health services<br />
• Ensure there are robust, youth-centred after care plans for youth trans<strong>it</strong>ioning out of<br />
hosp<strong>it</strong>als, rehabil<strong>it</strong>ation centres, detox centres, and recovery houses<br />
Investments<br />
• Establish more safe injection s<strong>it</strong>es across Canada, and ensure s<strong>it</strong>es are youth-friendly and<br />
safe for youth<br />
• Build youth-focused detox and rehabil<strong>it</strong>ation centres in all commun<strong>it</strong>ies, particularly<br />
rural commun<strong>it</strong>ies<br />
• Fund and expand youth housing for people recovering from addictions<br />
Interventions<br />
• Locate addiction services and supports away from locations where substance use is<br />
common (e.g. bars)<br />
• Offer programs and services in which caregivers struggling w<strong>it</strong>h addictions and/or mental<br />
health issues can access help w<strong>it</strong>hout fear of criminalization or having their children<br />
removed<br />
• Increase the availabil<strong>it</strong>y of drug management programs for caregivers<br />
• Increase the availabil<strong>it</strong>y of programs and counselling for youth w<strong>it</strong>h addictions, particularly<br />
in rural and remote commun<strong>it</strong>ies<br />
• Provide education on housing and homelessness to caregivers accessing mental health and<br />
addiction support programs<br />
• Provide peer mentorship programs for youth struggling w<strong>it</strong>h addiction and mental health issues<br />
