Provincial/Terr<strong>it</strong>orial Ministries Responsible for Housing<br />
1. Increase the availabil<strong>it</strong>y of affordable housing and rent subsidies in all commun<strong>it</strong>ies, including<br />
for young people who are at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness. Ensure young<br />
people have equ<strong>it</strong>able access to rent subsidies and are not screened out of supports on the<br />
basis of age. Simplify and exped<strong>it</strong>e the application process for obtaining rent subsidies.<br />
2. Work w<strong>it</strong>h municipal<strong>it</strong>ies and the commun<strong>it</strong>y sector to create and sustain housing options<br />
for youth who are at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness. Young people<br />
should have access to a range of housing options, including trans<strong>it</strong>ional housing, shared<br />
accommodation, independent living, and returning to their family home.<br />
3. Apply the principles of Housing First for Youth, as outlined in THIS is Housing First for Youth: A<br />
Program Model Guide, when developing and investing in housing for youth and their families.<br />
4. Support the development and implementation of commun<strong>it</strong>y resp<strong>it</strong>e and Host Home<br />
programs, which offer emergency housing in the commun<strong>it</strong>y to young people in need of a<br />
safe place to sleep.<br />
5. Increase investments in housing supports for persons w<strong>it</strong>h mental health challenges and/or<br />
addictions, offering a full range of supported and supportive housing options.<br />
6. Develop, invest in, and implement evidence-based eviction prevention interventions<br />
to support young people and their families. Interventions should be highly accessible,<br />
immediate, and adequately financed to ensure all youth and families facing eviction are<br />
provided the supports they need to avoid homelessness.<br />
7. Collaborate w<strong>it</strong>h the federal government and Indigenous commun<strong>it</strong>ies to improve the<br />
availabil<strong>it</strong>y and affordabil<strong>it</strong>y of housing for Indigenous Peoples in all commun<strong>it</strong>ies, supported<br />
by sufficient investments to ensure all Indigenous Peoples can access affordable, safe, and<br />
adequate housing.<br />
8. In collaboration w<strong>it</strong>h provincial/terr<strong>it</strong>orial Human Rights Commissions, increase the enforcement<br />
of laws banning landlord discrimination against tenants in the rental housing market.<br />
9. Implement and enforce inclusionary zoning regulations in all commun<strong>it</strong>ies in order to<br />
sufficiently meet the demand for affordable housing in each commun<strong>it</strong>y.<br />
10. Implement rent regulations that prevent landlords from exorb<strong>it</strong>antly increasing the cost of rent.<br />
